sba question
  • so can a mare who didn't pass sba ever produce get that will pass?
    asking for a friend...
  • Sometimes, yes. But the rule of thumb I got by is: if the mare didn’t pass SBA then they aren’t adding to the quality of my lines and not worth the GMTs to spend to unspay them or the IVs to boost them.

  • The only place I will use those is for bootstrapping, but I generally don't test them if that is the plan because it's expensive to unspay

  • If you breed her to a stallion of similar quality, then yes her foals could pass SBA. You would want to paper the mare and then breed her to a stallion of equivalent paper for the best chance of foals passing SBA. For example, if she is red papered and was bred to a B paper stud then she should have a chance of a foal passing. As others have said, the fact that she didn't pass SBA to begin with means she isn't improving the line. She must not be as good a breeder relative to her parents. If your only goal is to improve the breeding ability of the line, then you wouldn't want to bother unspaying and breeding her. However, if you just want to breed her for color or something then just be extra careful about matching her to an appropriate stallion.
  • Breeding advice compares a foal to their parents only. It is not a measure of breeding quality. Only AFPT and papering tell you how good a horse is at breeding.
