I'll leave this question open for a bit in case someone else has hints that I could use to speed things up.

It's the same search horses page, whether you access it by clicking the "view, filter, and select in search" link from the barn/pasture page or from the sidebar menu. The difference that allows you to select in barn from search is when there's a barn or pasture ID entered in the search filters. Then there will be a checkbox by each horse in the search results as well as a select/deselect all and a select in barn button. It will go to the barn you specified in the search filter to select the horses that you checked in the search, so it won't work if you had filtered for horses not in that particular barn. It also only works for one barn at a time, so you'll have to do multiple searches to select horses across different barns.
