What is "profit" in the search result sorting?

When searching for horses you can sort by "profit." What exactly does this mean? It doesn't seem to be the same as sorting by earnings or points...

My guess would be that it's earnings minus entrance fees, but I'm not sure.

I've wondered the same thing. It doesn't seem to be the difference between sale price and lifetime payout, which is what I originally thought it might be.Might be addicted to pixel ponies...
