bone loss in crop of foals
-
I have not seen this topic come up
and i just had a 3g crop of foal go down in bone den
my pasture is 2g wb stock no Rh in the field but i received 2 Riding horse foals
what caused this to happen
is it random?
is it something i need to look out for in breeding?
any ideas to shed some light as to why it happened would be so very helpful
links to foals found below
thank you

Every horse has a range that it can produce. I think what happened was that the horses have been producing at the low end of their range, and that's why you ended up with these foals.
-
What Xzenia said, there's a range they can throw and if it's on the smaller end they could end up RH/RP, i got a warmblood in my pasture this season out of the blue! Doesn't normally happen but the mare just threw a foal right at the top of the range
-
It happens a lot more frequently if you've bred consistently to an outside line of warmblood/riding bone size. I've bred to warmbloods with my riding horses as they had genes I wanted. If I didn't GMT the bone size back down I would get a lot of warmbloods out of my pastures. The way it is I get two to three a season.

Have a look at this old thread of mine to see the potential fun you can have with bone size!
