As a Varnish gene, Halo is something that will show up gradually. It appears as a 'halo' of lighter color around an Appy's spots, and it gradually widens/spreads until the horse is completely white. It shows up best if your horse has large spots. Small dots make the effect practically invisible.
The other varnish gene you can add or remove is Snowflake, which, when Homozygous, creates white spots on the horse like snowflakes.
My understanding is that both varnish genes actually speed up the varnish rate.
If you're looking for something to slow down the varnish rate, as far as I know it's a random hidden number and not something you can manipulate. Some Appies varnish faster, and there doesn't seem to be any particular rhyme or reason that I've observed. I believe the only Appies in the game that don't varnish out are Evergreen Boughs horses.Post edited by MackZ at 2022-09-18 17:36:56Might be addicted to pixel ponies...

I believe that's because she's an Evergreen Boughs horse. They don't varnish. I'm not sure if adding halo would make a difference to that or not.
Here are some horses in the search that have halo. You can see the lightening or softening effect around the larger spots, while smaller spots often seem almost invisible.

This one is an interesting example that shows two different varnish rates. The Black Appaloosa DNA strand shows the halo well and has already varnished quite a bit, while the Liver Chestnut Appaloosa DNA strand shows no varnish at all. So, the horses you've added halo to might just be too young or varnish too slowly to show it yet. It's something that will show more as they age.
