I'm stupid and don't understand the pasture mare thing
-
so I've seen around that if one wants their mares to produce good foalies, they keep them in a pasture. so I've been doing that, but how on earth do I know when to take them out and breed them for optimum foal quality?
-
First of all, this game is complex, so you're not stupid for not knowing things.
Pasture mares get their full bonus at 30 days pastured. They can come out during the day for showing, but they must go back in before nightly rollover to keep their bonus. You don't have to take them out for breeding if you don't want to. It's cheaper to pasture breed ($500 vs $1,000), and you get an email that tells you the best foal in the pasture. So if you have a 10 mare pasture, then you will know which is your best foal out of those 10.Thanked by 1DarcPearl -
When you add breedable mares and breedable stallions to a pasture, you will get a button that says "Breed this pasture". It won't appear until the pasture is able to be bred.
-
You can not take them out for breeding if you want a boost to your foals. They must be in the pasture when you breed them.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Also, the pasture bonus only counts towards the foal's quality if the mare was bred in pasture. You can't pull them out and hand or AI breed them and still benefit from the bonus.
Edit: I guess that part was already answered by the time I posted. :PPost edited by Cavalynn at 2022-10-07 09:41:30Thanked by 1Fiddler -
ok, so that means if i breed to someone else's horse, and the mare has the full pasture bonus, it won't count?
Further, so live cover so to speak will always result in a lower quality foal if you're breeding to a horse that you don't own and is not in your pasture? But if instead, i use straws from the same stallion, I will get the equivalent of the pasture bonus? -
You're not guaranteed to get a lower quality foal by hand breeding rather than pasture breeding with a boost. It's just more probable. The highest quality foal possible out of the particular pairing is still possible through hand breeding, but so is the lowest quality foal too. I think the pasture boost just "clips" the low end of the range of possible quality off the bottom. So with each day of boost, the lowest quality foal that was possible the day before will not be on the random roll of the dice when quality is assigned to the foal, if that makes sense. I think a 30-day boost clips off almost half of the range from the bottom, because pretty much 100% of my 30-day mares' foals pass BA, so they must be at least nearly as good as their parents.
AI breeding always gives a boost equivalent to a 15-day pasture bonus, and live cover outside of pasture always gives no boost, but the high end of the quality range is still possible.Thanked by 1Fiddler -
What? Does mares keep their bonus as long as they're put back before nightly rollover now? When did that happen?
-
yes, definitely, get her back into the pasture at midnight (or 24 hours?) to keep her bonus...
-
Best not to take them out in the first place. It is not a great idea to mess around with it.Need to contact me? Read this first.

I didn't realize that breeding them out of the pasture negated the boost, so thanks for clarifying that!Thanked by 1Fiddler
-
ohh, I see. so if I want a good quality foal, I should keep a mare in the pasture for 30+ days and then chuck the desired stallion in there too?
-
@Kristin, I call it the "Cinderella Effect", home before midnight or everything switches back to the way it was before!
I think the whole point of doing it that way was so that the mares could come out to show, to help with total points, but had to go back right after.Post edited by ConfluenceStable at 2022-10-07 19:57:10

Actually, I think the point was so that players wouldn't lose the pasture bonus if the mares were removed by mistake, or just to help with sorting between pastures and putting them in the barn in the interim. I've seen Ammit say she'd rather it wasn't used as a loophole to show brood mares.
-
@clynnrose that would be a royal hassle, taking them out and putting them back in after being shown!
-
@Fiddler I agree! I barely have time to get them in there, let alone pop them in and out twice a week.
-
Yup. It is a terrible idea to be taking them in and out. And if you lose all your pasture bonus for doing it it will be a good lesson learned. ;) CLynnRose is correct. It is to be generous if there is a mistake not so you can show the brood mares.Post edited by Ammit at 2022-10-08 03:47:37Need to contact me? Read this first.
