How does snowflake varnish work?

Can someone explain how snowflake varnish works or point me to some more thorough documentation? When I click the gene link on a horse's page it just take me to a page showing TRPM1 (Leopard). Does that mean snowflake varnish needs LP to also be on the horse? How does being homozygous versus heterozygous affect this gene? Does it interact with any other genes?

A horse must be homozygous for snowflake and possess at least one copy of LP for the snowflake pattern to show. Snowflake accelerates varnishing of appaloosa horses. LP is required for several spotting genes to be visible/active, including PATN, snowflake, and Halo.
These are example of young snowflake horses:

All snowflake horses will eventually turn white (except for any PATN-related spots):

Some horses that are homozygous for snowflake but don't have LP to "activate" it.
