Breeding advice testing criteria
  • What exactly causes a horse to pass or not pass BA? Is it the horses showing ability in comparison to their breeding ability? Is it their breeding ability in comparison to their sire and/or dam?

I’ve had foals comparison test superior and then not pass BA, and I’ve had foals pass BA and then comparison test as worse than, so I’m just wondering what exactly determines if a horse passes BA.
  • To add to the conversation, I bred a B foundation stallion to a bunch of red mares, most passed SBA, but the best of pasture did not pass. Perplexing!

  • It is comparison to both parents, so a foal can be superior the one parent and still fail BA.

  • Confluence Stable did a diagram a year or so back ; I ve referred to it so many times I ve bookmarked it :)

  • @annismyrph, doesn't explain how come my best of pasture got neutered and several of the other middling ones passed SBA. My stallion and mares were all 10. and B or Red.

PS I've come to accept that weird stuff happens but always wonder.

  • Going by that chart, it doesn’t make sense that a foal would test worse than their sire/dam and then pass BA because they’d be guaranteed to be within the middle or left section of the chart if they’re worse than one of their parents
  • @Fiddler - the only thing I can think that would make that happen is if maybe that foals dam is higher breeding ability than the sire. In that case, the foal could be better than all the other foals from that pasture, but worse than its dam. Could you link the foal in question?

  • @RedtailFoxFarm - BA passes foals that are slightly worse than one or both parents. It only snips them if they are significantly worse than one or both parents. SBA passes superior and AGA foals, and comp testing will tell you which of those categories your foal falls into.
This is why we get some foals that pass BA, but not SBA.
