I think it's easiest on a larger mobile device, like a tablet. That makes it a bit easier to zoom in and drag pieces around, and you can use the "flip horizontally" and "flip vertically" buttons to add to the variability. It also involves a lot of trial and error to see what will and won't work for the look you're going for. It is much easier now, with the new "add new item" button in the tack editor.

We are slowly building up the functionality of the editor. There is a ton of backend work that has taken priority until now.
