labelling by generation
-
I've a quick question for people, when you label your generations do you go G1 = foundations or G1 = baby from foundations? I was thinking g2 = baby from foundation horses but started second guessing myself because its the first generation bred by you lol
-
I do M1 for foundations as in the first generation, so M2 would be 2nd gen for me :)Bluegrass 272432 | Forest 54250 | Mesa 9056Thanked by 1Taridan

That sounds right, I think I just started over-thinking it lol
-
I do 2g on alot of my old lines for foals that come from foundations. Now i just add the number for each gen they are behind there name.
-
In my head G1 is a Foundation, G2 is the foal from two foundations.
I am not a big fan of putting many letters and numbers in their name, so I use a tattoo for each generation, and my breeding stock gets names after the alphabet.
G1 all have names beginning with A
G2 all have names beginning with B
G3 all have names beginning with C etc.
It is easy because I use a dictionary when naming them.
My "problem" at the moment is to decide what language I should use for my restarted line.Post edited by Herzeloyde at 2023-01-07 12:07:41 -
I do 1G for foundations, 2G for their foals, etc. I also put an abbreviation for their size/bone density because I have some lines for Riding Horses, some for Draft, and some for Warmbloods. The rest of the name is based on their parents names.Might be addicted to pixel ponies...

My foundation horses are labeled as Expro Exper RS or CHRS then it is G2 G3 ect
-
I dont use a number for foundations ( so they are LG whatever I name them )
second generation is LG2 (Sire's name ) Game iD number
3rd is LG3 ( Sire's name ) Game iD number
etc etc. The only other "tag" I add is for Snowflake SNF for hom and sn for het.Thanked by 1Taridan -
For best searchability within my barns, I do a number for the generations (like others, I consider foundies 1st gen), then a letter for their paper level.
So 2A (PT #) @* @*

@annismyrph your idea is brilliant!
I use a number and letter system with mine, but also so I can track papers as they get higher. Similar to Tzano & others, I also try to name my foals based off their sire’s name (so I don’t inbreed).
For example:
xPr Devil Dog (exceptional producer, xPf is exceptionally perfect, pFd is perfect foundation )
2gA Mattis ( 2nd gen, A papered)
5gS Composer (5th gen *Star stallion)
For my lined horses, I include their Pts:
Pocket Sand 13 3 (13.3PT [assumed] *Star)
APP BayStrike 12 9G (12.9PT *Gold mare)
If you’re using different studs with different genes to cross, you can also abbreviate genes - Gp for Gastra Plume, Lc for Lace, Ow for frame, etc.
Hope this helps! :)Post edited by bravo52 at 2023-01-07 16:51:16 -
I do what others have commented and treat foundies as G1. Lined horses are G2, G3, etc. usually with game number. Especially for stallions in later generations, I'll use the search codes to show at a glance any special genes. Exanples:

# RSB - Roan sabino
# XX - Homozygous Nexus
