I read many times that it is important to breed similar quality horses together to maximize foals passing BA. However, when I match generations, and both parents have passed BA, I still seem to wind up with more spelds than when I breed my unevenly bred horses. What gives?

Which pairings in particular are you wondering about? Can you post links to the horses? And just because parents pass breeding advice, it makes no difference by itself whether or not the foals are more likely to pass.

if you are hand breeding higher generations its best to use a pasture so you get the bonus for the foals, if its gen 1 or 2 I dont find I have much difference in hand breeding vs pasture breeding

I seem to just get a ton of colts I don't need, and if I get a filly it ends up being spayed. :))

It's always a bit of chance. Horses that are great producers will produce foals that can be great show horses, great breeders, or both or neither lol. Breeding Advice helps you weed out the bad breeders, but those horses can still be good show horses. The money makers in this game are show horses - more show horses = more points = better daily payout.
