I don't believe there is any benefit to using straws in terms of increasing the chances for an intact foal. It does allow a player to store the straw for use at a later time, rather than doing an immediate breeding, which might be a factor if someone wanted to use a particular stallion but didn't have a suitable mare still unbred or old enough for breeding and wasn't sure if the stallion would be up for public stud in another game year.

One other reason that I can think of to request straws instead of using live cover is if you have an egg you want to use with that stallion rather than an open mare.
