ISO support/suggestions about dental visits *delt with*
-
Today I have to go get some cavities filled, and I am terrified. Due to years of bad experiences, the dentist is just as scary as going back to the state where I was born. Going to the dentist is a sensory nightmare for me, and I don't know what to do. Last time I had to go I put my ear buds in and tried to focus on the music, but I still had a panic attack and couldn't do anything about it.
Any suggestions on things to try to distract me from the situation?Post edited by Xzeina at 2023-02-01 14:21:47 -
see if you can use Rain instead of music in your earbuds ; its a white noise so calming , whereas music can gear you up. Also use some type of fabric for your fingers to grip and relax on ( think of a cat kneading ) it is self soothing and help syou to focus on something other then what going on in your mouth ; and be Honest! Tell the dentist and hygenist you are nervous becuase of past issues with another dentist ; they may give you something to relaxThanked by 1Xzeina

Absolutely ask before your next appointment - they can prescribe you a medication to assist if you’d like!
Also, don’t be afraid to shop around. I went through 5 dentists before I landed on my current one and hes /incredible/. He shows me what tool he’s using, how it works and what it’ll feel like…he’s really good!Thanked by 1Xzeina -
My dentist gasses me every time I go in because I have panic attacks. Even the smallest of his gloves sets me off. I don't mind the man himself, but after I get in the chair it's a nightmare. I've had to have a lot of work done this past year and that's the only way I've gotten through it is gas.Thanked by 1Xzeina

Ask for them to put the xray lead apron over you, like a weighted blanket.Thanked by 1Xzeina

Good idea, Lecobb. Would act like a thunder coat you use on dogs to calm them down in a thunderstorm.Thanked by 1Xzeina

Update: I survived!
Initially, I had a panic attack, and the people backed off and let me regulate before continuing. They ensured my mouth was very numbed before moving on, which helped. -
awesome ; and hopefully they are now aware and willing to give you something so you can deal with it easier next timeThanked by 1Xzeina
