  • I was having a similar discussion with Cheshire the other day trying to understand more about the Evergreen non-varnish horses and their genes.

H/H was brought up, but I still don't really understand it.

I looked through those horses linked, but I don't really see a consistent color/pattern between them. What should I be looking for?
  • @lecobb8 Try looking at older horses than in that search. The edges of the spots start to fade from the outside in, giving the spots a halo effect:

  • I’m spending significant energy on incorporating halo into my Appaloosa herd and wasn’t see much halo effect and even in the searches wasn’t see much of the effect. I know how the gene is supposed to work; I was just never seeing it actually in the phenotype of the game. I think I keep playing around and see if I can actually get a home grown one that shows it. Thank you ClynnRose for the example.
  • Thanks CLynn. I had to go to horses over 15 to 20 to really begin seeing the halo on more than the rare horse.

It looks like the H gene also helps keep horses from varnishing, because I saw a few hom snow horses that were still "flakey" at an old age.

Does H only work when homozygous?
  • Halo varnish is incomplete dominant, so it shows with one copy but more so with two.
    Thanked by 1lecobb8
  • This is my foundation Halo sire - xPf FindersFee. Halo is by nature a small feature to appaloosa spots, its not a dominate noticeable feature such as white 3, kit m, or frame, for example.

  • @bravo52 love the way you tacked him

  • You might not be seeing it since it progresses as the horse gets older. What it does is it makes your spots smaller because the edges look fuzzy. So they halo-out from the outside of the spot, towards the inside of the spot.

This didn't work out for my program because I was breeding for larger spots so that the spots would still show signs of Dunfactor promoter (since the spots didn't varnish). So I ended up getting rid of my halo horses.
  • Thanks for asking...I’ve been wanting halo appaloosas in my lines as well and I haven’t been seeing any great progress. I made this guy in the lab & you can’t really see a halo effect.

  • RAD I can see it, maybe you need to refresh him? The problem is he has small spots to start with. But as they get older they should fade more
  • I can see them a little, but it’s not like the examples I’ve seen before. I didn’t realize it was an age thing though, so I’m hoping he gets better. Thanks
