Should I Get Chinchilla or Platinum?
-
I have the funds to buy one copy of one of these genes, but as they seem similar, I'm not sure which one. I breed both black and bay horses, so homozygous chinchilla would eventually show up in all its coolness on some but not all of them. Platinum would jazz up both, but, as I understand it, in a different way. What advice do you guys have?Game number 273531

Neither shows black horses. I would suggest doing some looking with the search and seeing lots of examples so you can see what you like. They do rather different things.Need to contact me? Read this first.

I would highly recommend using the search feature to see what different horses with each gene look like. I personally like both so I don't have a preference. Neither is going to show on a plain black base though. Platinum I believe needs red pigment to show but I can't remember for sure. If I recall correctly it acts similarly to Mushroom
(Whoops! Didn't see Ammits comment until I posted :)) )Post edited by HayesStable at 2023-02-20 07:29:48Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

Here are some of my foundations with each gene. I find the chocolate gene looks rather nice with both but they also look good without it.
Platinum:
H1 Plt Captain Morgan
001 Plt Silver Wing
H1 Plt Paloma
Chinchilla:
H1 Chn Shepard
001 Chn Stargazer
001 Chn Sunstrike

Against my expectations, I decided on a bay draft stallion with a copy of chinchilla. I enjoyed the hom chinchilla bay horses in the search.Game number 273531

I have been thinking of adding one copy of chinchilla (it's all I hope to afford by the end of the month) to my grullo stallion. I didn't realize it didn't do anything to black, so I spent a while looking through the search.
When I see black and dun, or black and silver, I see really dramatic horses like this one (which I like):
Long Story Short FTF
When I search bay, or buckskin, or chestnut, I see many horses that are almost all white, like a varnished appy (which I don't like). What color is most likely to give a dramatic show of chinchilla? -
Any thoughts?

You already listed what you find dramatic colors for chinchilla ( black and dun, or black and silver). Not sure what you are asking.Post edited by Ammit at 2023-02-25 08:40:17Need to contact me? Read this first.

@lecobb8, Silver black makes the most dynamic color like that. Just remember that chinchilla eliminates red pigments, which is why chestnuts are all white, and pure black is unaffected. Silver dilutes black pigment slightly in a dappled pattern so that some of the red "beneath" shows. Chinchilla then eliminates that and creates those vivid dapples.
I made a post here on different chinchilla combos with examples: https://www.huntandjump.com/forum/discussion/comment/385066#Comment_385066
Platinum, on the other hand, de-saturates yellow pigment, which is usually a much less noticeable pigment, though it is distinct from red. Cream causes it to show more which is why platinum is so much more effective on het cream horses like buckskins and palominos.Thanked by 1lecobb8 -
Thanks Lynn, that's exactly the info I needed (which pigment each dilutes).

That is not quite right. There is no yellow pigment in horses. Only red and black pigment. Platinum removes yellow tones from red pigment.Need to contact me? Read this first.
