After doing the sba and the foal doesnt make it, there are two different messages.

The sire of xxx can produce better foals
or
The dam of xxx can produce better foals

Is there a significance to these different messages?

Yes. It tells you which parent the foal compares unfavorably to.

so, if I understand correctly, I should look for a better mare if the sire message pops up?

Nope, you can't make that inference because it does not compare the sire and the dam together. If the foal fails based on the sire first the message gets listed. You can get that even if the dam is better than the sire.

Sometimes it gives a message saying "The of xxx can produce better foals. I would not breed this one." Is there a particular significance to that message, or is it a bug?

MackZ you would have to take note of when it happens. I can't say having never seen that.

I usually get at least one each month. It has come up from AI, pasture, and hand breeding, so method doesn't seem to make a difference. It's also come from very different matches, so it's not just from one mare or stallion. It just randomly happens. I had one this month from my Gold pasture(which was SBA tested en mass), and I had one last month from a futurity AI breeding.

I also have gotten that message @MackZ, @Ammit , I always assumed the foal was a worse breeding prospect than both parents lol
ETA : it just happened again for this foal , pasture bred full 30 day bonus :
The of 17345081 can produce better foals. I would not breed this one.

That's the message I usually get on sba when one gets snipped. If I knew how to post a screenshot I'd take one.

I've seen that message, and had the same assumption that annismyrph did. I do have a screenshot of it, but I don't know how to post them either.
