AFPT.. statistics?
  • ..so what i think i understand here is that for any horse or mare, there is a range of abilities that their foals might inherit. Breeding the same mare to the same stud, you might get something really good or a loser..

but how many foals should a stud produce before you have a good idea of his power to produce?

    Thanks

  • I'd say anywhere from 10 to 25 mares to give you a good idea of Afpt and what he produces.

However, I use paper level and superior testing to only use my best studs. All 2nds gens are A papered, all 4th gens are Star papered. And with the new paper system, all 6 gens will be **Star.

Because I mainly pasture breed, I tend to only keep the Best in Pasture studs for breeding. The best in pasture can vary though too, if all the foals in the pasture are low quality, then the best is still not good enough for me. An example is my 3rd gen KP fantasy pasture gave me a Best in Pasture A papered colt. I gelded the whole lot as they would not be good enough as breeders for me.

  • I breed mixed, Foundation stud is always B but the mares are Yellow/Red. Like Humboldt I am very strict with my gelding/spaying based on top producers and comparison testing.

With the new Max Ability it should be much easier to keep the best :)

  • Ok , so let's say I breed one stud to 10 red mares. I breed his twin (theoretically) to 10 gold mares. Won't the AFPT be better for the stud bred to the gold mares?

  • @darkfrost so far, breeding red studs to yellow mares is pretty disappointing.
I agree about maxing. That's where most of my gmts seem to go, since I don't have a huge stable

  • @fiddler The stud bred to the gold mares will have a better AFPT (average foal PT) because the mares factor into the breeding.

Breeding red studs to yellow mares just means you will get more spay and gelds. They are different breeding abilities, so in order to pass BA or SBA, there is a smaller percentage that pass. Breeding equal quality gets you more foals that pass breeding advice.

But remember, the original focus of the game is to breed a good show herd. Just because you get lots of spay/gelds doesnt mean you have a crap stud.

I only breed exceptional foundations - red and B papered, and I only keep As and Blues from their breedings now.

  • I also keep Reds that are AGA to the Blues as it means I can use more colourful foundy mares who are not ExPro/ExPer.

If I made more money per day I would only use Reds, but I found this worked fine for me and did not stop the progress of quality since I extensively tested the 3rd Gens.

  • @darkfrost I didn't know you could have a red that was as good as a blue!
    Thank you!

  • @Fiddler I believe that the AGA testing has a few % on either side of a paper-level before you start testing Superior. :D

I believe it was around 2-3% but I am not exactly sure. I would dig up some examples for you but most of my older stock died and none had specific names.
