I think I just figured out one of the mysteries of the universe. Is the difference between bay and brown simply dense pheomelanin?I am Fiddler, my pronouns are she/her

Partially correct. Here is Ammit's announcement of the way brown now works from last September. It contains a link to the original announcement of changes to agouti which gives the reason for the change.
