What genes made this Silver Black horse so dark?
-
Hey everyone!
This isn't my horse, but I was researching how Gray Reduction reacted with black based horses and I found this gorgeously dark smokey silver black mare.
I breed a lot of smokey silver black horses and mine often have a golden or amber hue to them, and I have only achieved something this dark with Ice19. I would love to try for this dark version without the fantasy genes!
I was wondering if people knew what combo might have made this happen. Is this the hom gr at work? Does the hom DP have a factor in it?

Hyper pigmentation from the grey gene. They've bred her to have grey and grey reduction.Post edited by bluchrystals at 2023-04-21 05:18:51Thanked by 1OfMoosehorn

Thank you @bluchrystals!
There aren't a lot of examples to look at, but these two are also silver blacks with hom G and gr, but aren't nearly as dark. I guess that's why I was wondering if the DP had anything to do with it. Maybe it was just a lucky roll of the image? I know there are a lot of variations in how silver black expresses itself.

@OfMoosehorn Appaloosa lightens the color, both those horses are appies.Post edited by Ammit at 2023-04-21 05:33:25Need to contact me? Read this first.

Ahhh, great point Ammit! I hadn't thought of that.

I love it when gray makes silver blacks super dark, particularly on chinchilla. There's only one page of gray silver black chinchillas in the game. I'm working on growing a whole new color line off of these:

What does gray reduction do, reduce the effect of how fast it goes white?
-
@OopsDotCom Yep, when homozygous, gray reduction slows the effect of gray and prevents horses from completely "graying out." It has no effect when heterozygous.
-
So the bronze line I'm starting, it needs Gray to get it to go the right color, I tried not putting in the gray and it just didn't work. So keep the grey and add 2 gray reduction? I sure hope it will allow me to.Post edited by OopsDotCom at 2023-04-27 19:11:11

@OopsDotCom Yep! I had it in mind to make a line of the same color a few weeks ago, but I ran out of GMTs to finish another project stud. If you make an e/e/ a/a G/G Ch/Ch gr/gr line, it will be true breeding gray gold champagne and keep the color because of the gray reduction. It's the combo of gray and champagne that's making that bronzed metallic look ever since the gray update.Post edited by Cavalynn at 2023-04-27 20:38:17Thanked by 1OopsDotCom
