Why is this foal so varnished?

I've just started breeding chinchillas, so I'm not super familiar with the gene yet. I know LP varnishes the coat, but with only 1 copy of Vrn, I didn't expect this baby to already be so washed out.
  • I believe it's the Chinchilla that causes the fade.

  • Chinchilla blocks red pigment and gives a silver tint to black. So since your horse is brown which is a dark bay, the red is washed white with the black points allowed to peak through. I’ve been trying to breed chinchilla but haven’t gotten too many homozygous foals yet.

Edited to add Ammit posted at the same time as me so I was mistaken.

  • Oooh, I had seen chinchillas with the "white" bellies, but hadn't put it together that it was pangare (btw, how is that pronounced?).
  • I played around with Ammit's search, and wow, this one is striking! It seems like A*/a horses are the darkest, but I don't know if I'm just noticing a false trend.

  • I think it's the chinchilla, not pangare. Pangare is a dominant allele and that first horse is recessive for pangare. I have a lot of brown chinchillas because I always loved the look of it on browns before the update because you could get that really unique "white shading" pattern that you can't get any other way. And yep, that last horse was how chinchilla looked on brown before the update. Ammit said a few days ago that the darkest shade of brown isn't rendering right now for some reason, but we used to have some het At browns that were almost all black except for a little bit of red on the belly and muzzle. Those were my favorite.
  • It is both. Pangare is what is causing the fade but the reason it is white and not brown is because of the chinchilla.

  • Sorry, but I'm confused now. Doesn't two small p's mean no pangare markings? No lightening around the belly and muzzle and flank?
  • Correct. pp is what I use to get "black livers", where Pp and PP have a lot of pangare markings. + is even more extreme.
