I think it's just random variation in expression. Sort of like dapples or no dapples on liver chestnuts and silver blacks.

Yupp, it is random. You can reroll the seeds to get a different type. The patchy ones are my favorite and if the two dna strands are different enough, I always reroll till I get that expression. Takes a while sometimes though, I find the patchy chimeras a lot more rare.

I prefer patchy, especially if the colors are super different. How many revolts that takes varies, by a lot!
