Spreadsheet Tracking
  • Hi all!

I am building a spreadsheet tracker and I am just utterly baffled as to what to track. For those of you (if any! lol) who use spreadsheets to keep things straight, what characteristics of your pixel ponies do you keep tabs on? Do you have a method for tracking lineage at all? What about genetics? Do you have tabs to keep just your mares and studs separate or do you separate by generation? Or do you separate by breeding project?

    All responses welcome! :)

  • I'm not sure what 'tracking' you want to do, but I use spreadsheets to plan breedings and, when numbers start to get out of hand, for cutting down.

I only keep track of my breeding stock so once they hit 20 years old they are removed from the spreadsheet. I have changed what I keep tabs on over the years (real life years!) but currently I have a separate tab for generations with columns for name (with a link to the horse so I can go straight to it), paper level, body type (for me that's mainly Draft or Warmblood), the full genetics with any of the 'white' genes highlighted in red so I can avoid lethal crosses, whether and how many eggs/straws I have, and then a column on the mares pages for the stallion that it will go to that month (for the hand breeding ones). For those in pasture there is a similar column on the stallions pages to say which ones will go into pasture that month.

I don't know if that helps or not. :)

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure.

  • Spreadsheets! :x

I have so many. I prioritize(or track) all sorts of things, some of which are typical but some that are irrelevant to HAJ in general. I do keep separate sheets for breeding projects but I also keep track of spayed mares/geldings. Like WhiteValley, every spreadsheet has a link to the horse for easy organization. Some of the things I track:

-Line progression! In order to remain intact in my herd every offspring must test superior to their parents. Mares/stallions that consistently produce foals that are only as good as get the snip. I use a formula that accounts for the amount of offspring they can produce in their lifetime so that I'm not introducing too many 'average' producers into the line.

-Colour stats! For lines that are consistently producing too many perfect superior colts(curse you colt fairy!), I have a colour guideline fallback to help keep numbers under control and so I'm not tempted to waste hb's on genderswaps/GMTing missed genes. Each line has an acceptable colour variable that I'm aiming for. Example: My boosted satin lines MUST be hom for Satin, S+, DP, and at least carry Kit M on one locus. If a foal(colt) doesn't carry the specific genes I'm looking for then snip provided they do not test superior. With the advent of being able to GMT missed fantasy genes(thank you sincerely for this, Ammit!), this has been much harder to adhere to but I'm working on it. :-\"

-Consistency! Mares/Stallions who routinely produce inconsistent offspring get the snip. It's a personal pet peeve of mine so I imagined up a scenario where inconsistent horses are either perfect angels in the show ring or grab the bit and kick dirt in the judges' faces. My breeding program aims to produce good-minded chonks in and out of the show ring. Inconsistent babies undergo intensive Good Manners Therapy and if they fail(aka I don't have the hb's) then it's the snip. That said, I do keep inconsistent geldings/spayed mares that don't pass strict breeding advice for data purposes. That spreadsheet has their show record, training level, earnings/points per year, total points/earnings, daily payout, current lifetime payout, and PT score in addition to any damages they cause to the barn.

-Straws/Eggs/Embryos! I am guilty of hoarding over 400 embryos but I promise they're all neatly organized in a sheet. A different sheet contains all of the straws and eggs I have stored away with all of their stats so I can easily pull up horses to pair off. The freezer section in the game is rather jumbled for me so this helps me accurately keep count of who/what I have and how much. I also keep a fancy tab for my recipient mares available so I can keep track of exactly how many open mares I can use for embryos in that breeding year.

Wall of text aside, the gist is that I mostly use them to keep numbers under control and ensure I'm meeting the arbitrary goals I've set for myself. I have separate tabs in each sheet for mares/stallions/snipped horses. I get a lot of enjoyment out of seeing all the different data I've collected on my herd over the years(since 2015!). Ammit has created such a wonderful game and environment that inspires so many varied avenues of enjoyment. :x
