Era 15 - breeding uneven generations?
-
I've been playing for a while but Era 15 is the first time I've tried to be strategic about it. My stud colts from last "year" will be three soon, but no second-generation fillies will be old enough yet. What are the pros and cons of trying the boys out on the foundation mares, vs having them chill another year? I'm excited to start breeding them but will wait if it's likely to be better long-term.

If you want to try to get your 2G stud on the top-producing category of the era 15 leaderboard, definitely breed to era 15 foundations his first year (with full pasture boost if you can). I did that for the first time with my era 14 line and won a few extra GMTs than I would have if I'd had him wait. Having uneven foals won't damage his standings when you start breeding even again (and those uneven foals might even get you spots on the highest PT of the year category too). The true 3G babies will become his new top foals that count towards his leaderboard standings later, so you can sell the unevens or alter and keep as show ponies if you want. You could also offer him for futurity if you don't plan on using his live covers until you have era 15 2G mares ready, depending on how much pasture and barn space you have.

Thank you! For the uneven babies, would it work to keep them and count them as second-generation for breeding? Or would being uneven affect their breeding ability?

On average they won't be as good as even 3Gs for breeding ability, but they also would count as lined for the points-earned by lined horses category, so you might be better off altering them right away and just keeping them as dedicated show ponies. Of course, if there's some you particularly like and want to breed, you can do that too. Another thought, you can keep the uneven mares intact for your first even 3G boys to breed to before your even 3G mares are breeding age. I had altered all my unevens and then regretted it when I realized I could have done the same uneven breeding strategy with my 3Gs as I did the 2Gs, but at that point I didn't want to spare my even 2Gs just for my 3G boys to have babies early, so I had to breed them back to foundations again and they didn't produce as well as they might have if bred to lined mares.Post edited by Cavalynn at 2023-07-14 20:21:11Thanked by 1JayneDoe
