Best way of breeding
-
What is the advantage to using straws vs pasture bonuses?
If I understand correctly, breeding vs straws is better than pasture breeding, am I correct?Thanked by 1OopsDotCom -
For each day a mare is in the pasture, she accumulates one day of breeding bonus, which "clips off" part of the lower end of the range of quality she can throw in her foals, so the random showing ability and breeding ability given to her foal will only come from the upper end of her range. A full 30-day boost clips off about half of the bottom of that range, from what I've observed with perfect foundations in pasture, anyway. With full 30-day boosts, pretty much all of my perfect foundation mares throw foals better than them, only about 1/100 get snipped by SBA. Using straws only equals 15 days of pasture boost, so unless a mare has less than 15 days of pasture boost, you're better off breeding in pasture. Unless you want to egg flush her and get more than one foal from her for the season.

Thanks for that excellent way of explaining "snipping off the lower end of the range". I've been playing a while, but I think that gives me a better understanding.Thanked by 1OopsDotCom

Yes. Thank you.

I pretty much only breed pasture unless I have mares that don’t fit. It’s cheaper and the foals come out better quality.Thanked by 1Fiddler
