It will start when Ammit decides that it is time. The original post suggested an era change every 6 months, but also stated that the timing might be based on how many horses got created in a given period.

I did a search for era 5 horses and the two that are likely the oldest were born/created on Nov. 20, 2014, which was about 7 months ago. There are 40,593 foundations belonging to that era. Era 4 appears to have started in June, 2014 and has 15,852 foundations currently.

We're really not all that far off the original month estimate, but we have had all the excitement over Sea Ponies and Nexus horses, and trying to get DP and so forth, so there has been a lot of creating going on to account for the high total. Ammit's also been very busy with all the wonderful upgrades to the image system, so the era change may have been set to a lower priority.

Probably time to start looking at that
