  • Are the reins supposed to be attached a little lower on the headpiece? I have them attached to the gold button, but when I zoom in there appears to be a bit of a gold piece sticking out down lower and I am wondering if that's where it's supposed to attach? (The reins are deliberately upside down. Right side up the part you hold is way up in the air.)

If its a western style, yes it gets attached at the end of the "shanks" as they're called.

I forgot to mention that English bridles don't usually have shanks as they primarily use snaffle bits.

(Snaffle.bits had a joint in the middle that allows them to be flexible where as western bits are a solid piece)

  • Yes, the piece I noticed was similar to the first horse except it was only slightly curved, not s-shaped. I'll edit it, thank you.
  • Yea there's tons of different styles lol. Not all.of them have that curve, some are straight.
I grew up.riding western. Closest I came.to English was watching horse races on TV lol
  • Western bits come in all types including a snaffle variant. On our ranch, we all use a bit we call a snaffle. I believe it is actually a short shank broken bit that looks similar to that top picture that Kat posted.

  • That is often called a tom thumb bit in the US. They combine the harshest parts of both a curb and a snaffle and are more intense than a straight curb. They are probably the most popular western bit.
