How Do You Organize Your Barns?
-
I currently do it by breed and gender for my breeding stock and keep the show horses separate. I used to do it by gender and generation, but that got out of hand pretty quickly. Things are starting to get away from me again and I was curious as to what everyone else does.

I do it by generation and color ( like 2g Blue Appies or 4g Liver ) I keep all my showhorses separate in their own labeled barns :)

My barns are a lot to keep up with, but they’re organized lol
Anything I’m not actively using (or going to use in the future) as breeding stock gets sold/auctioned or spelded and stuck in a show barn
I don’t bother to separate by gender in my era lines because I make sure I don’t keep any more than 3 stallions, and I just put a different prefix on their name so they’re easier to findPost edited by RedtailFoxFarm at 2023-10-11 19:59:37 -
I have my show barns, expro foundation barn, regular foundation barn, lined stallion barn, lined mare barn, and a barn for my other line.
Most of my breeding horses are in pastures -
Like paradoxphoenix, I keep all of my breeding mares in pastures sorted by generation. (And I don't spend real money, so getting pastures isn't easy and keeps my breeding numbers relatively limited.) As far as barns go, I have show barns, 1 sale barn, 1 small stud barn and 3 "yearling barns" where I keep my breeding horses until they get to age 3 (when they get put in pastures to start their pasture count.) I have a handful of empty 120 barns from my early days that I keep to hold either my daily creates that are waiting to be auctioned, or to hold my lined foals until I have had time to test and sort through them all. I make sure to keep my primary barn empty by organizing any purchases / new foals into those specific holding barns and pastures as soon as I can. I find that having empty barns is incredibly helpful for organizing and temporary holding spaces so that I don't have my primary barn feeling chaotic every time I look at it. @-)

@ofmoosehorn, how do you get pastures without real money?
-
I keep all mares I'm currently using for breeding in pastures according to which line and/or generation they are(except for my backwards line).
Foals go in my "Babies" barn once they've been sorted, 2-3y/o future breeding stock goes to the "In Training" barn until space is available for them in their appropriate pastures.
Studs I use each month to breed my pastures go into a 30-stall barn labeled "Pasture Boys", and all of my publicly available studs go into the "Stud Farm" barn. I have a 60-stall barn for my backwards breeding project, and all of my other keeper horses go into my 1000-stall show barns, which are separated by letter(i.e. "Show Barn A", "Show Barn B", etc.).
I also have a 120-stall barn for my highest pointed oldies, labeled "Retirees". That one always has spaces opened up after rollover.
Finally, I keep my young studs that I need to choose between for breeding in a 30-stall barn labeled "TBD", and horses I plan to evaluate/auction at 10+ y/o go into "Future Auction".
I try to keep my primary barn empty for sorting pasture foals. -
My barns are categorized by broodmares , stallions , and show horses with a number behind each barn . It makes it easier to have them in larger groups. Then i just use the search horse to narrow down what horse im looking for. It has been the easiest method and least time consuming for me.
