Friesian BC can be used on Heavy horses now too! Thanks Ammit!
  • Super excited to see that in news and alerts when I logged in today. I've now updated all of my breeds to have the Friesian as my Heavy horses!

These are some of my favourites so far:

  • Yes, you can use the BC on both Medium and Heavy bone horses now. You can see it in the news and alerts for the game.
  • no what i mean is, visually can you tell the difference between a friesian wb and a friesian draft?

  • Oh! I understand what you're saying now.

No, you can't. But I'm personally okay with that because I'm mostly going to be using the PRE as my medium bone horse, with the exception of only one of my breeds. Eventually, when the Irish/Traditional Cob is out, some of my breeds will be updated to that as my heavy horse. And then some of them will stay Friesians :D

Also, as a fan of the red Friesians, this one makes me happy lol

  • It's the same BC. If everyone wants a heavier Fresian then it would have to be voted in and created. I did not add another BC. Like the infernal, you can now use the Fresian on more than one bone weight. When we get breeds like the Thoroughbred or the Trekhener that are between light and medium bone they will get to be used on both as well.

  • That's so exciting!
  • I love that, because horses of the same breed can range in size with in the breed, I have see Quarter horses look light in bone as well has heavy in bone so the Quarter horse could be light or med horses. I am so happy with the change.

  • Yep!

Friesians used to come in many different colors, but they were lost in favor of black. But, because red is recessive to black, it managed to hide with the occasional red Friesian popping up here and there.

There are attempts to preserve the color, but, like all color breeding, that comes with issues.

But! I still love the red Friesians. Considering the high inbreeding and health issues in the breed, they really need to allow red to stay rather than doubling down on eliminating it. Oh, and white markings, too.
  • I actually have the opposite opinion. The breed is a solid black breed. That is the breed standard that was agreed upon. If people don't want to breed to the breed standard why are they trying to force the breed to change instead of just doing their own thing? It feels a bit like showing up to a football game and insisting everyone change the rules of the game to something you like better even though everyone agreed to standard rules already.

The red Fresian breeders should do what the red Angus breeders did and just make their own registry. If you want to play by your own rules that is fine but I don't think it's ok to insist other people change the rules for you.

  • I’m not insisting they change the rules for me, though. The health of the breed is suffering from a small gene pool and they’re shrinking it further by eliminating otherwise fine individuals (like black that carries red and red) just for color. I want to see Friesians survive into the future, and currently they have shortened lifespans, fertility issues, dwarfism, and other problems.

There aren’t enough red Friesians to make their own registry, unfortunately. It would just rapidly magnify the issues already growing in the full breed. They’d have to do a lot of outcrossing. Which I think is fine, but they’d probably end up more outcross than Friesian.

Personally, I think (for the health of the breed) smart, guided/approve outcrossing (not the wild doodle-like cross breeding that happens) would be a smart idea. But I’m sure you wouldn’t like that either.

I see it like how the football uniforms and gear changed over time for the health and safety of the players. And how there is movement towards teaching players safer tackling technics to minimize concussions and the build up of brain damage over time. Or how rules *are* added or changed as needed and players are fouled for breaking them.
  • I actually think approved outcrossing is a much better solution than changing the breed standard. I am doubtful the tiny number of red Friesians from a scant few lines that are still represented in black Friesians can add enough genetic variation to have any meaningful impact.

  • You’re probably right. But still, a person can wish lol
  • Oh totally! Hopefully, the reds can go in the Friesians Sporthorse registries with no issue.
