Did the Varnish Promoter Genes change?
-
CF4 Love And War EV
I've noticed that my horses that do not have Varnish Promoter genes are varnishing more than before. This particular horse is showing more varnishing then my 15+ year horses with no Varnish Promoter genes.
Is there something else going on? -

@Ammit are you sure nothing is reacting? I have young horses that are showing signs of varnish when they shouldn't be. Here is a 4 yo that is already starting, and they have no Varnish Promoter genes.
CF3 Wild Tango EV
I'm concerned because I've put a lot of time and resources into my program, breeding horses with no varnish promoter genes so that LP doesn't wash out the dun factor markings as they get older.
When players would ask about how VP works, I could pull up my horses at different ages and you could see they still maintained their color into their mid-late teens even after refreshing. -
That white film does look a lot like varnish, but the spots look the same shade. Doesn't varnish leave the spots alone?
-
It does leave the spots alone, which is why I've added ASR1, Sty and DP to the line. Those genes equal bigger spots, which means more surface area for the Dun Factor patter to show. But also with no varnish promoter genes, the rest of the body was hardly touched until older age.
CF4 Love And War EV looks like a horse with Varnish Promoter, when they don't have any. And CF3 Wild Tango EV shouldn't even be showing signs at age 4. -
CheshireFarms I have not touched the script that makes varnish.
I am not arguing about what you are seeing, but I haven't touched it so I can't tell you why you are seeing what you are seeing.Post edited by Ammit at 2023-11-10 12:36:03Need to contact me? Read this first.

I just tested it and it looks perfectly normal here. 0 1 and 2 copies shown
The horses you posted are the same color. I bet it is something to do with that color not a change with varnish.Post edited by Ammit at 2023-11-10 12:51:25Need to contact me? Read this first.

Ok, I made a dupe of your horse to do some testing with and I can confirm it is because of the base color.
All appy horses varnish, some just have factors that can cause them to varnish faster or slower. Varnish promoter is just one of those factors. How much pigment the horse has can slow varnishing considerably. The horses you posted have multiple dilution genes that reduce pigment and increase varnish speeds.
This is the dupe of your horse at age 4.
This is what your horse will look like at age 14
The same horse at age 14 with no mushroom gene.
The same horse age 14 with no dun gene
Age 14 no dun and no mushroom.
Other things of note is that red horses varnish faster than black-based horses and bays varnish faster than blacks. Mares also varnish faster than stallions. So your red-based, double-dilute mare is going to be a much faster varnisher than many others.
So no nothing has changed. This has been part of varnish since it was first introduced you are just noticing it for the first time. :)Need to contact me? Read this first.

@Ammit Thanks so much for your detailed explanation with examples of what can affect varnish. I had no idea there were any genes in the game that would look different on mares vs. stallions.

Some more comparison.
The original horse age 14
but now brown instead of liver
and as a stud instead of a mareNeed to contact me? Read this first.

Here is the same black appy as a stud and a mare so you can see how the mare has moreNeed to contact me? Read this first.

Oooh thank you @Ammit for that detailed information. I did not know that about varnish and the base colors/density/gender. I only knew that pigment density would change spot size. This makes a lot more sense to me, since mushroom is involved and normally I am looking at my normal dun factor appaloosa line.

This was super informative, I didn't know any of this! Is there a way this all could be saved into a FAQ page somehow? I just *know* I'm going to forget details about it!

Anyone can add this information to the wiki.Need to contact me? Read this first.

I did not connect the pieces that different base colors varnish faster than others but that makes so much sense with what I have seen on some of my Evergreens.
-
@Ammit I'm working on something now, it's up there as a WIP but I'll probably have questions I will need your insight on later. Right now it's word vomit and then will try to simplify things as I go on.
How the heck do we format things on the wiki? I couldn't seem to make html work. -
it's a WYSIWYG. You don't use html you just edit the text directly like a word editor.Need to contact me? Read this first.

@Ammit, see that doesn't make sense to me. If I can edit it like a word doc, when I highlight a word and select Ctrl B the word should be bold?
I'm using google chrome if that makes a difference. I've seen other posts with bold text, but can't seem to figure out how they did it, and I haven't gotten any responses in the wiki chat yet.
This article for example: https://wiki.huntandjump.com/books/genetics-101/page/how-to-read-genetic-testing-results-a-complete-guide-to-understanding-your-horses-color
Has all kinds of formatting: headers, special text, colored boxes, links and images. -
You need to use the formatting buttons at the top of the page.Need to contact me? Read this first.

@Ammit that's what I thought would be there, like how we have a bar in the forum. However I don't see anything, and I feel like I'm crazy now lol.Post edited by CheshireFarms at 2023-11-14 11:06:54

@CheshireFarms That image is kind of small, but it looks to me like you're just editing the description of a section there, not creating a new page and editing the content itself. And I don't think sections themselves can have content, they are just containers for subsections, and they are optional. Subsections are the actual pages and you can have subsections sitting right in articles. The hierarchy for the wiki is Category, Article, Section, Subsection. Categories are what we see on the homepage of the wiki. Articles are what we use to organize particular topics. Sections are optional, but can't have full body text either, just like the Categories and Articles, but they're useful for further breaking down large topics. Personally I've been avoiding using them because it's confusing and I'm just using Subsections. Subsections are the actual pages. That's what you can write full body text in and edit and format like a word processor.Post edited by Cavalynn at 2023-11-14 11:24:42

omg lol alright let me try that and see what happens. but you can click the image to make it bigger
-
oooh I see now. I click new subsection and THAT page comes up with the editing bar.
-
@Ammit, Actually, can the "Section" hierarchy be removed or hidden from the editor and maybe rename "Subsections" as "Pages"? That has caused confusion often in the past.
-
@CheshireFarms Glad you got it sorted! I did click on the image, but it just said bad gateway.
