Pangere and Varnish questions -> Closed, answered
-
I looked in the genetics guide, but if the information is there I didn't see it.
Pangere... does it get stronger over time?
Varnish... does it work if there is no Lp?Post edited by OopsDotCom at 2023-11-14 21:03:57 -
Varnish IS Lp. Lp is not the spots, it IS the varnish. Other genes can modify the look of an appaloosa and turn a solid varnish appy into a blanket or leopard horse but they are just modifiers. LP is the gene to activate varnishing, there is no such thing as appy without varnish or varnish without appy.

Here is an example of what I am seeing in my Strawberry Moon Rank Specials. When I go into the lab, I see there is no Lp, but there is Vrn. If I understand you correctly, the Vrn will not work because there is no Lp? And I'm not sure why the Vrn doesn't show in the list of genes under the horse's picture.

Vrn used to be a hidden gene, a long with LPP1 & LPP2. A while back Ammit made it so you could see those genes in the GMT lab (but we still have hidden genes I think). Those genes don't show on the horses profile, I'm assuming because you can't search for them in the data base.Thanked by 1OopsDotCom

Thank you. Am I understanding them correctly? that with no Lp, the Vrn doesn't do anything?

Varnish PROMOTER is the name of the gene. It makes a horse varnish faster. Varnish promoter has nothing to promote if you don't have appaloosa. LP is the gene that turns varnish on and off.Post edited by Ammit at 2023-11-14 04:04:17Need to contact me? Read this first.

Thank you, Cheshire and Ammit. Now I understand.
What about the Pangere? -
Pangare doesn't progress with age, but it is more prominent with two copies than with one. It lightens the muzzle, flank, and lower legs. It doesn't show on black pigment (except pangare+) only red pigment. It shows on both chestnuts and bays, but it's more visible on chestnuts because the black on the bays legs won't let it show there. It's also more distinct on darker coats. Liver chestnuts with hom pangare are very obvious.
Here's a liver chestnut with no pangare:
