Tiktok post of horse that scewed grey or brindle
-
So theres alot of debate on tiktok about what color this horse is and i thought at first it was a brindle or chimera. I have never heard of a scewed grey before but thats what alot of people are saying this horse is. Is it rare or only in other parts of the country? Im suprised i didnt know this one.
Heres the link.

Brindle is stripes. Multiple things can cause brindle including gray skewing, roan skewing, chimerism etc. Some people who don't understand why we call colors certain things and are just parroting get obsessed with if something is skewing OR brindle because they don't really understand what these words mean.
A common cause of brindle on grays is skewing.Need to contact me? Read this first.

So they are similar things but on grey its considered skewing? Are they both similar genetic mutations that also cannot be reproduced?
-
No.
Brindle just means stripes. Lots of things cause stripes. Some genetic, some embryonic. Only rarely does a mutation cause brindle but it is one of the multiple ways it can happen.
Gray skewing is when a normal gray gene gets messed up in embryonic development and does not turn on in all the cells. Skewing is never inheritable.
If the cause of a brindle gray is a mutation the mutation might be inheritable but the stripes would not be.
Real-world example the stallion Catch a Bird was brindle because of a mutation, his mutation was a new form of roan. That was inheritable, his stripes were not.
Brindle is a big old umbrella that lots of different things fall into.Need to contact me? Read this first.

That is the brindle-est horse to ever brindle. TikTok can be unhinged lol
Ammit explains it well. -
Think of Brindle as an umbrella term instead of an actual gene. It's just a term used to describe something we see, without knowing the actual cause.Thanked by 1Kintara

This makes sense. Thank you for explaining this to me!

@Brandybrookes I seen that horse as well and wondered if someone would ask about him. Thank you for posting.

I saw a post somewhere that was about this mare and it said the cause of her 'brindling' was Lines Of Blaschko (https://www.iflscience.com/you-have-invisible-zebra-stripes-and-theyre-called-lines-of-blaschko-68354)

Lines Of Blaschko are the tracts formed during embryonic development. Brindle markings follow the lines of Blaschko but are not themselves Lines of Blaschko. Brindle stripes are formed because development starts at the spinal cord and the cells spread out from there in bands. Tabby cat markings also follow Blaschko lines. Thinner lines happen when the variation happens later in development. Thicker lines happen earlier.Post edited by Ammit at 2023-11-17 17:23:23Need to contact me? Read this first.
