Abaco Barb Preservation Program
-
The Abaco Barb was a type of Spanish Colonial Horse in the Bahamas. There are many theories on their origin, but it's most likely not a single source. What is known is that at one point they were over 200 strong, but deforestation, human intervention, and hurricanes saw the last of them die in 2015. Tissue samples from the last remaining mare were saved in the hopes of cloning. And this is where HJ comes in. Using state of the art HJ Cloning technology, we were able to bring the Abaco Barb back once again!About Our Breeding Program
The Abaco Barb is one of the closest Breeds to the original Colonial horse brought over in the 15th century. Their geographic isolation has kept them undiluted from modern stock. Here at Cheshire Farms we were able to clone 2 stallions and 10 mares, as the foundation of our Preservation Program.

The Abaco Barb has very strong Iberian traits when compared to other Spanish-lineage horses. They have low-set tails, short strong back, convex faces and thick, long manes and tails. They are small, ranging from 13.2 to 14.2 hands tall. But they are exceptionally strong, with solid legs and very strong hooves. Their colors comes in Bays and Browns, with Splashed White, Roan and Rabicano. Historic photos show other colors, with possibly duns and blacks, but only time will tell if those colors will ever pop up again.
Cheshire Farms began in May 2020 with a focus on breeding Dun Appaloosas. With hard work an dedication to the breed, we are now 13 generations strong. Our foundation is built upon excellent breeding stock and rigorous testing. You can expect the same dedication from any breeding program hosted by Cheshire Farms.
