Silver Black Variations
-
I've been adding silver to my black (E/E) line and I've been noticing some differences in appearance depending on some of the other genes.
I haven't noticed a big difference between having Z/- or Z/Z but it does seem like sooty can make a difference.
With het Sty/- I end up with a redder looking silver

With hom Sty/Sty I get a more greyish silver and more dapples

But I've also seen the more greyish colour with het Sty/-. So maybe this difference is random? Or due to something else?

With S+, I get this cool two-tone effect. I think it requires at least one cream to look like this.

Am I right that the sooty is causing most of the difference? I'm looking to GMT a new stallion soon and it would be good to know I'm on the right track.

Yep, silver smokey black with S+ is causing that particular look. Silver dilutes the black enough for the cream to show more, and S+ alters the pattern of the darkening to cause the cream to show especially well in the underbelly. I breed for that in a lot of my lines. I think the redness and dappling is random otherwise, though. I haven't noticed any way to make a point of getting grayish tones and dapples consistently. I just reroll for them when I especially want them.
