Quick discussion: eggs from 3 year old mares?
-
I am strongly considering adding the ability for premium members to be able to collect eggs from 3-year-old mares. They would still not be old enough to carry a pregnancy but you could get eggs and there for foals a season faster.
I think a lot of people would really enjoy this change so it has been on my to-do list for some time now, but it would change the meta with the leaderboards, so I figured I should ask for member opinions first.
If I implement this change I want to do so on the 1st of Feb so that it does not drop in the middle of a breeding year and mess up people's plans.
ETA: Because eggs are premium only feature already. Not intentionally trying to exclude nonpremiums, but that would be the result of course.Post edited by Ammit at 2024-01-30 22:14:49Need to contact me? Read this first.

I do think it is worth noting that if you want to be competitive on the era leaderboard you already have to use eggs. You have to get 3 foals on the ground to qualify a mare. If you are 3 seasons behind the leaders in an era you already are out of the running. So it should make zero impact on WHO is in leaderboard contention, which was/is my biggest hesitation. It will just change how fast lines move on the lb.Need to contact me? Read this first.

So, it would make no or minimal change really to the mare leaderboard, but the 2nd gen and lined leaderboards and also later gen sires and dams down the line? I would be glad of this change just to get more eggs, though. I wouldn't be looking to use it to get ahead in the leaderboards. It makes sense to be able to do this from a realism perspective.
-
Realism is a big factor for me. It is perfectly reasonable and often done to collect eggs on a mare before she is ready to carry foals herself.
It would impact the leaderboard by making the generations move faster. You could get to cap quality in fewer seasons doing this because you would not be waiting for mares to age up. In all it would take several months out of the process. I don't think the down months where you are waiting for mares to age up are adding to the fun of the game in any meaningful way.Post edited by Ammit at 2024-01-30 23:02:46Need to contact me? I like the idea. So far, when I have had a new era line, my first 2G studs have nothing to do their first breeding year except maybe futurity or breeding older era 2G mares just to add genetic diversity. That has been okay too, so I don't feel like I'm wasting them breeding them to other eras or live cover to other members later on, when they otherwise might be in my own era-line pastures. That would still happen with this change, since the era-line mares I could breed them to wouldn't be ready for pasture yet. I really like the idea of mares and studs becoming "breeding age" at the same time through AI breeding. I can see it would cut months off of the process towards reaching cap quality. Personally, I would enjoy offering extra SBA foals from these breedings for sale to basic members too.

I second Cavalynn's thoughts.

I like the idea, alot of the times im waiting a couple months before i can breed "waiting on mares to age up" i dont have alot of lines going so this would definitely speed the process up.

Oh great idea!

I’d definitely be on board with this!

I agree with Cavalynn! I'd love to be able to collect eggs from 3 year olds!

What if egg pulling were allowed only from 3-yo mares for basic members? So they aren't left behind in the leaderboards, but don't get the full feature and multiple seasons of eggs without being premium? Of course, if you allow embryo pulling from 3-yo mares as well like has been mentioned, that would enable basic members who are committed to the leaderboards to get at least three foals on the ground from a 3-yo dam too.

Embryo collection would make far more sense and be far less work. I replied this to a similar comment on mesa
"I think I am going to start with just eggs and give that a try, if we find it causes issues I can expand it to embryo pulling as well. I figure it is better to start small and then expand if we need to. People tend to get very upset if I remove features so I have to add things slowly."Need to contact me? Read this first.

What is embryo collection?
-
@Fiddler Instead of pulling an egg and using it and a straw to make an embryo outside of the mare, you use a straw to artificially inseminate the mare, then pull the embryo to be later planted in another mare. I think you can do this once every five days, like egg pulling. It's more expensive, but since basic accounts can't use eggs, it's the only way for a basic member to get multiple foals from a mare in one season.Thanked by 1Fiddler

Thanks everyone for the lots of feedback. It is clear the community is overwhelmingly in favor of this change. It also removes some awkwardness of half months where stallions are of age and you have to wait for mares to age up, which I don't think adds anything of value to the game.
For now, this is going to be a premium-only feature only via eggs. I am going to wait and see how it impacts things for a few months before I make any additional changes regarding embryos.
I appreciate all your insights they help make the game a better place.Need to contact me? Read this first.
