I wrote up some articles on Appaloosa Genetics just for questions like this! You can see all of them here https://wiki.huntandjump.com/books/all-about-appaloosas-wip
HOM Patn1 will spread your spotted blanket more.
Adding LP Promoter LPP1 or LPP1/LPP1 will extend the blanket to a near-leopard without changing the size of the spots.
LP Promoter LPP1 can only be seen in the GMT lab.
LP Promoter LPP2 also extends the blanket, but makes your spots much smaller (Micro dots).
Adding ASR1 or ASR1/ASR1 will make your spot size larger. -
Thank you so much. I looked in the gnetics handbook but when I look at the pictures, many times I can't spot the difference. Or don't understand for example the one gene controls roaning on appaloosas, but i don't know what roaning is.

Darn, none of those gnese are available on this horse.Post edited by OopsDotCom at 2024-03-20 23:18:09

This is a lined horse ; you can only change what its parents have for genes. If you want to be sure to get the genes you want you have to start with Foundations.

So the proper term is Varnishing, not Roaning. Even though the effect might be similar, when you use Roaning people might think you are talking about the Roan gene on Kit.
Horses with LP will automatically Varnish. Varnish is the process of lightening the coat by progressively adding white hairs. The rate they Varnish is determined by a number of things. This article talks about some of the different things that change the rate of varnish on a horse. https://wiki.huntandjump.com/books/all-about-appaloosas-wip/page/interactions-of-appaloosa-spotting-with-other-genes
Varnishing can be reduced by not having Varnish Promoter (Vrn) genes, and by having a higher pigment concentration (darker colors). The more dilutions a horse has, the more their varnish is expressed. And females tend to be more varnished than males (subtly). -
annismurf, this is the dam, what I was hoping for. I thought she had the genes I need.

Cheshire, than you so much for the explanation.

Problem isn't the dam, it's the sire. The sire doesn't have any Patn1 genes. The dam is HOM for Patn1.
