Using low PT horses for show
-
Is there any advantage to using a low PT compared to high PT horses? What's the advantages and disadvantages to each if there is? I seem to recall reading something about that but can't find it again because I don't remember where I read it.
-
I think lower PT (not super bad PT, but just not high PT) pay well sooner and high PT take longer to start really paying off, but pay more when they do. But I never learned all the detailed ins and outs of showing in the game.

Cavalynn is right. A lower PT horse will move steadily up the classes, remaining in each one for a few weeks to potentially earn money as they go. A higher PT horse will rocket up the classes, maybe staying in each one for only a week, and if they are placing nearer the bottom each week they are less likely to earn much money until they level off (and possibly not then if you are really unlucky). It is best, as far as possible, to have horses with a range of PT scores, and a range of ages.
Hope that helps. :) -
It kinda depends on how low you mean.
It's definitely true that lower PTs stay in each level longer, but the lower levels don't award as many points. But ~9.8-10.6 can earn almost as much as 13+ PTs if they level off at 7W and never move to 8L.
Here's a discussion with a graph I made a couple years ago. It's about 17yo horses, but it's by lifetime points, not points by year.
https://www.huntandjump.com/forum/discussion/51641/graph-of-pt-vs-points
Only 9.7 & up, but I looked at tons of horses & I can tell you that horses lower than about 9.0-9.5 don't earn much, because they level off below 7N.
Unless something's changed since then, of course!Post edited by SherwoodStables at 2024-05-30 13:59:29 -
Lower PT horses are very handy when you are building up a barn but tend not to be a great idea for larger established show herds. You don't need those super high PT horses to get started.Need to contact me? Read this first.

The reason I'm asking is usually at rollover when horses die off my showing bonus drops, but then through the next month it gradually picks back up again. This month it didn't pick up as much as I lost, so I have a low bonus now compared to the same time last year, maybe some lower. I don't know how you're supposed to raise your income. Just more show horses? I would have to drop my low cut-off point to accumulate more horses. Normally for show horses I require 10.4, but I have more barn space now, I bought the big barn so I can accumulate more show horses. I don't think I explained very clearly.Post edited by OopsDotCom at 2024-05-30 21:01:35

Yes you need more show horses. You did not add enough new show horses in prior years to make up for the loss this year.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Okay, thanks for confirming that. Now all I have to do is figure out how. I'm going to have to use lower pt horses. I'll put them in separate barns then look at them after a couple years.
Thank you everyone for your explanations and advice.Post edited by OopsDotCom at 2024-05-30 23:29:17 -
If you need show horses the foundation rescue is often swimming in pointed foundations that need homes and higher PT show horses are often sold cheap in the auction.Need to contact me? Read this first.
