Introducing The Dutch Warmblood and State of the Game Updates - Game Feedback wanted
-
I waited on a true warmblood BC until I felt like I could really do it justice. I am so glad we did because I feel like this one is a true knockout. It's got to be my new favorite BC.
The DW is now available for you to unlock and is included for those with a BC subscription.
Something of note is that the foal's hind legs are quite spread apart. That means for now the far side hind leg is going to have some errors. We know about that and it will get fixed but we have to do a bunch of reprogramming the image generator to work for 4 legs instead of 2. It's the same for all BCs. It's already on our list.Personal Updates
I wanted to give you all some updates on how the move is going. Yesterday we spent hours with our lawyer at notaries and the immigration office. It was worth it though because as of yesterday I am officially a legal EU resident and have started my process towards permanent residency. Haystack also applied for his residency today and will have his in a few weeks.
Immigrating to the EU with a child is very complicated. Yesterday we applied for the family reunification process for our daughter. Once that is approved Haystack has to fly with her back to the United States. They will have to stay there for an unspecified number of weeks (Most of August probably) until she has a visa and is allowed to fly back to the EU. Only then can she apply for her residency.
Yes, it's a really stupid and expensive process. It's also very disruptive. We appreciate your patience while we are doing all this flying back and forth dealing with immigration offices. It's very hard to run a company while dealing with this. It's a lot and it's overwhelming.
All that said, we are loving it here. It's an easy and gentle way of life. The food quality is so nice, it's incredibly safe, everyone is less stressed and has time to enjoy life. We just got to get through the last bit of this moving process.
-------------------------State of the Game
2 more breed characteristics coming this year
We have already put out 5 new BCs this year (Irish Draught, Thoroughbred, Dutch Warmblood, PonPon and Seapony.) We are planning to put 2 more in 2024. A fantasy one for Halloween and a real breed for December. We have not locked down what those will be yet.
Instead of doing an eighth BC this year we are going to go back to some of those early attempts and look at fixing up the shading and some of the details. We have learned a lot about how to make the horses look good and think we can do can improve upon our early efforts now.
We will make sure and put the old versions and the new versions to a vote by the members who use that BC before we switch things over. If you’ve invested in these BC’s we want you to have a voice. The Saddlebred and Friesian are first on our glow-up list.
We also plan to use this extra time to work on converting our 333-pixel high backgrounds to 500 and phasing out the old shorter backgrounds.
Image Generator Queue Status
I would love to be able to give you a holistic explanation of what is going on with the image generator queue. I can’t because understanding why we had issues requires so much technical knowledge that any explanation I can give would be meaningless to you. What I can tell you is that we had a problem where the generator queue was getting stuck in a loop and other issues where our server farm was using old information. This happened while Haystack was traveling internationally. As soon as he could dedicate a large amount of work hours, he got things stabilized. He is actively working on changing how our generator handles the queue to make our system more robust and improve our operating costs.
Back in January we turned off automatic image generation in the the background (that means pasture foals, aging up, etc) for everyone except premium accounts. Meaning if you did not have a premium you have to open the page of your horse to see an updated image. We did this as a cost-cutting measure to slow the game's hemorrhaging of money. You can read about it in the thread “Unfortunate news about image generation - big change for non-premium accounts”
At this time we still do not have an ETA to get it running for non-premium accounts yet. This month is going to be a MASSIVE server bill because of all the times our generator got clogged up. I am hopeful that the new queue system will get our costs to a more reasonable amount and we restore this functionality for those with basic upgrades soon. We will keep you posted when we have more news.
The image generation system is a massive hydra with tons of heads we have to keep talking to one another (and all the heads are orange cats). The queue is just one of these. It takes deep focus and tons of hours to make improvements to it. Clear focus and long stretches of free work hours are not something we have had in spades while dealing with an incredibly expensive and stressful move in the middle of an economic downturn. We are on the downslope at this point though. The worst is past us and we are all looking forward to getting this beast tamed.
Skin Generation Status
Did you know that our image generator creates skins for your horses just like a video game? This is another head on the hydra that needs work. The skin system was built to only handle the near side legs. The new BCs have far-side legs showing as well. We did some bandaid fixes to prevent the worst of the visual errors from that but the system needs some serious work to get everything showing correctly. We really want to get this work done but the move and server stability issues have been screaming for our attention. I just wanted to make it clear that we know there are issues there and we can’t wait to fix them for you.
Same with the overdue improvements to the Advanced Tack editor like mane swapping, moving brands etc. Those changes are on our list. We are so excited to get to them. We just have to muck out the barn of all the gross unfun background poop first.

Check in on Changes - Feedback wanted
When I make changes to the meta of the game, I try and make a point to keep an eye on things and make sure it is working well. Here are the changes we have made in the past year that I want some feedback on.
-3yr old egg donors
In February I allowed 3-year-old mares to have eggs pulled. I said at that time I was going to start with just eggs and we could add 3-year-old embryo creation to that if everything went well. From what I can see it is super smooth and has been going fantastic. How do people feel about adding direct embryo collection at 3 as well?
-Primary Era
One change I have been keeping an eye on is moving the primary era forward. I am very happy with how this going. Once I finish moving the primary era come December it will perfectly line up so that era becomes the primary era just as that era is starting to hit the breeding ability cap and the race for that era is finishing. With the adjusted timeline you will never be able boost into a primary era and dominate it without having participated in the race to cap for that era.
I know a lot of you don’t know what that means, don’t worry about it. Just know it has to do with the deep strategy related to the brand new eras that start every 6 months. This is such a high-level and complicated strategy that impacts so few people that I am not asking the general population what they think of it. Please don’t ask for lb strats on this thread, make a new post. If you are one of the small handful of members who have been aggressively competing in these new eras though I am happy for any feedback on moving the primary era. (Not other lb changes, please. See below)
-New Era LB rebalancing
In April we started a system of trying to make competition in the newest eras more egalitarian. The original plan was to switch the price to IVs, then we settled on limiting some eras. I don’t think we have quite nailed our goals here just yet. Please don’t post feedback about that change here. I am going to make a dedicated post about it so we can have a community discussion. It needs more than we can fit in this thread.
-Breeding Lab Changes
This breeding lab update has been the slowest of slogs. Sorry about that. Not only am I dealing with the move and all that entails but I have to run vast other swaths of the business as well. Please know lots more improvements are coming on this one. It’s on my to list for tomorrow even! That said, if you have feedback you want to share I am all ears.
---------------
Thank you for your patience with us on this stuff, and for making it through this monster post. I try to give a good rundown of what’s going on a few times a year. This is your opportunity to let us know what is or is not working for you so we can adjust our plans accordingly (Again lb era limits will get its own thread soon.)
We appreciate you so much! Thanks for taking care of our family.

I'm a premium member, and I would be ok with turning off image generation if that would help any. How much work would it take to set up an opting out option? Or maybe we can vote on it? Turn it off for a 1-2-3 months in exchange for XYZ?Thanked by 1MelenasDeLasOlas

Right now that would just add to our work load. Better for us to fix the problem at it's core but thank you for the offer.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Thank you so much for the update - even if I didn't understand the technical bits! I have a premium upgrade but I've noticed that some horses up to the age of 5 are still looking like foals unless I open the page. Is it just pasture bred foals that are supposed to age up automatically? I use both pastures and hand breeding. I'm not fussed about the fact that the pictures haven't updated, just wondering.
-
It could be any number of factors. It may just be that the system was down when their number was called and so they never updated. We are going to keep working on improving the system and making sure it doesn't leave images behind like that but won't be retroactively regenerating horses that got missed in the past.
Basically if there is an active but with it, we will squash it. What you are seeing may or may not be because of passed issues that are already solved.Post edited by Ammit at 2024-06-20 06:54:45Need to contact me? Read this first.

I don't do much era breeding so I can't offer feedback on that, but as far as 3 YO egg pulling and embryo creating I'd love that. Having the extra time to pull from mares, even one year would make a big difference!
I'm very excited to see what changes are coming to the breeding lab, it's taken some getting used to, but I love the ability to put public straws and eggs up for sale!
Thank you and Haystack for all the hard work! I hope the rest of your moving adventure goes smoothly :)
*Would like to add that I hope we see a new light bone BC this year if possible. We've seen a lot of medium and heavy recently and while they are beautiful, I am patrial to the light bone as that is what I've always and will continue to breed the most :)Post edited by kgstable at 2024-06-21 13:44:47Licenses: Watercolor, Nacre, Splash M, Wrong Warp, Phantom Autumn/Lace/Diamond Sparkle/Web/Hearts/Shamrock/Muddy Puddles/Roses/Critter Tracks/Jellyfish/Birdtracks, Paintbrush Cool, Paintbrush Prism, Plaid, Shatterglass, Inkspot, Toner, Mushroom, DFP2, Onyx, Platinum, Ice 6, Ice 17Thanked by 1Ammit -
I'm so glad and excited to hear the Friesian and Saddlebred are going to get some work done on their shading. I had worried it might not happen because they're already being used by players who might like them the way they are. Of course, I wouldn't want them taken away from players who like them as they are either, so I'm glad there's going to be a vote on that. Are we going to give input before remakes are done? Or vote on finished revisions?
-
Finished revisions. I have found that a bunch of community input actually makes it harder to get good results. We like it to catch glaring errors but have found looking at the actual references gives us better results than community feedback.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Thank you for all the hard work guys! Keeping everything going while doing such a big move deserves all the respect!
I only have one note about the AI lab, and that is that I would love to get back the option to pull eggs and straws from the lab ;;) It takes me quite a lot more time than it did to collect eggs, and I loved being able to see both ages and number of straws on the pull page, so I could get a quick overlook of who was aging out and needed to pull more straws.ID 195859Thanked by 1Ammit -
Thank you for all the hard work you've been putting in! Even with the bugs and issues that have popped up, your diligence and quick responses have made the gaming experience remain fun.
Your plans for fixing older BCs sound perfect, and I'm sure the vast majority of players will be very appreciative of the update.
I have been making use of the 3 year old egg pulling, especially for the newest era, and I really love it. Adding embryo collection, I'm sure, will be just another aspect to love.
The Dutch Warmblood looks amazing! I'll be adding it to my purchased BCs asap.
Again, thank you for all your hard work despite the upheaval in your personal life. I'm amazed at all you've been able to accomplish during your move and the whole process involved with it.Might be addicted to pixel ponies...

Love the new Dutch Warmblood, just a really nice horse, I think your best yet. The Friesian is probably my favourite BC, so curious what the changes would be? I feel the Traditional cob is a just a hairier version on the Friesian which means I don't love it as a breed representative, although it's nice as a BC for sure.
As someone who hates change :) I have adapted to the egg and straw pulling on the horses pages quite well. I have to send straws to myself to put an expiry on them, but I'm not doing thousands, so it's ok. There is probably a better obvious way, but I haven't worked that out yet lol!
Overall there really has some been some great changes in the game, I do love (mostly ;) ) how you keep the game new and fresh for all of us. Some really cool additions in recent times. It's been a really fun month with all the new HH's, and I have absolutely loved the member background packs. Thank you Ammit, and Haystack, for everything you do.
Oh and 3yo egg pulling, and embryos, yes I'm all for it, I do it in real life lol!
Eras, I think you are way onto it which ones have hit max and just get ahead with boosting, I love the era maxxing limits, opens it up for more people. No issues with how you have set it up re primary eras, limited eras etcPost edited by Kintara at 2024-06-21 01:55:49Thanked by 1Ammit -
I personally am very excited to see how the Saddlebred gets a glow-up! I use that BC a lot cause it's one of two that I own, and I definitely have wished it looked as polished as the newer ones. Stoked to see it's going to get some attention!Formerly OscarWildin

Love the new Dutch Warmblod. I will need to add another line to my stable. Thank you for the updates and plans moving forward.
I am comfortable with all the changes you mention. I would love to see how leaderboards will look with the changes. I haven't gotten much into them but I was trying a bit more this game year with the new Era. -
I’m looking forward to glow ups to the first BCs!
I like the Friesian, but I’ve moved away from it as the Cob came out because the shading is so much better.
If the Arabian gets a glow up, too, I might buy that one! -
Kintara I understand your point but the bulk of the members wanted that look so we went with it. I can't change it because so many people are in love with it. That's what they wanted for their herds.Post edited by Ammit at 2024-06-21 10:49:11Need to contact me? Read this first.
