What's the difference between a cob and a draft?
-
When I look at them in a barn, some say cob and some say draft. I thought a cob was a draft.

A cob is a pony-sized draft. A draft is horse-sized. The difference is height, not bone weight.Thanked by 1OopsDotCom

Aww shucks, I thought the cob was a regular draft.
So if I want my horses to be the cob BC, I have to make them shorter? To what height?
And do I still need to make the weight to "heavy"?Post edited by OopsDotCom at 2024-07-02 23:35:29 -
The Cob BC can be applied to any horse with the 'heavy' bone weight, regardless of height. The BCs are only specific to weight, not height.
Horse height:
White Point Star
Pony height:
1G KIT Made for Marvin 15
Both have the Traditional Cob as their Characteristic(BC), but the first is tall enough to have "Draft" in their breed name and the second is short enough to have "Cob" in their breed name.Post edited by MackZ at 2024-07-02 23:52:34Might be addicted to pixel ponies...

Thank you, Mack. But what's the height differences in case I decide I want them all matching?
-
14.2 and under for Cob, 14.3 and up for Draft.
-
Thank you. Now I should pick one rather than split my breeding two ways? Do you others ever work on a breed and have t wo different heights in it or do you pick one or the other?
-
I'm not picky about height in my lines, but that's because my focus is on quality and color. Some choose to stick with pony or horse size, others don't. It's all about what makes you happy with your own breeding projects.
-
I prefer taller horses but I never minded a few ponies in my lines if they were perfect otherwise. I certainly wouldn't keep them a separate line. I've even merged in descendants of my collectible line into my main lines. Weight is more important to me because it has more effect on how they look.

Thank you, Mack, Cavalynn. I think that's a good idea.
