I will be updating some embryo mechanics soon here and could use some help figuring out how things should be displayed.

-I am going to allow the pasture bonus of the recipient mare to be applied to any embryo foals they carry.

-I am going to add the ability to use a mare "supplied by the university" for embryo implanting. For 1k you can just pay a fee and not have to have a surrogate mare on hand. (They will have no pasture bonus)

An important thing of note is that more and more browsers are refusing to display ultra-long drop-down lists. This is a growing trend in browser design and will not be going away. As such I need to start hard limiting all drop-down lists in the game to never show more than 1k horses at a time. When I update the surrogate mare dropdown there will only be 1k horses listed.

Currently, the game does not show you pasture mares in the surrogate options and displays mares in reverse alphabetical order (z first) so it is easy to force your surrogates to the top of the list.

My question is how should the new drop-down be sorted?

~~1)Should the University surrogate mare be the first option on the list or the last one on the list? (The game will remember if you selected a uni surrogate for your last foal.)~~ - decided it will be at the end, other wise the game will keep picking this option over and over and driving people nuts.

2) How should the list be ordered? Should it stay in reverse alphabetical order or should it go from most pasture days to least?

I love the idea to add these two new features. :)

1) Personally, I wouldn't use a University surrogate so I'd rather the option were at the end of the list. If someone wants to use it, the list will remember that, and if we don't it'll go to the next mare on the list without having to open the menu and choose that.

2) I like the reverse order so I can create a bunch of surrogates with z at the beginning of the name and just keep clicking when I'm implanting embryos. Sorting by pasture days also sounds interesting and useful, though. I would be okay with it because I do all of my pasture breeding before embryo breeding so I wouldn't accidentally implant in mares that I mean to breed in pasture. I can imagine wanting to implant particular pairings all in pasture bonus mares. But would that maybe put other mares above z name mares in the list, after mares with pasture days are all bred? I wouldn't want to accidentally implant an embryo in a mare I want to egg flush, which I usually do after breeding season is over. Is there any way to have sort options we can toggle between?

If we changed the order in the list to sort by pasture days count the mares with 30 days of pasture bonus would always be first on the list regardless of name

ETA: I will have the drop-down say how many pasture days a mare has

As soon as someone on Forest suggested that the uni surrogate goes first I realized that would be miserable as the game would always default to the no bonus uni surrogate for every single embryo you tried to implant. It would be so frustrating to use that way. I can't imagine anyone would ever want to use the uni surrogate (no bonus and more cost) if they had their own surrogates they could pick from. I removed that question from the OP. :)

I am struggling to think of a reason why someone who had a bunch of pasture mares they used for surrogate reasons would not just have them properly labeled so they showed up on the top of the list, but I want to see if there is anything I am missing here before I commit to a set up.

I vote against sorting by pasture days. I often use the first few letters in a horses name to quickly find them in the drop down. I have before had dedicated Broodmares for surrogates, so all I had to do was open the drop down hit the B key, and it would automatically drop down to all my B names.

I recently renamed all my surrogates to start with z in part based on your suggestion so please sort by that :D

i wish that the horses in the list could be sorted (for example by ERA!!) that would also make the lists smaller. I think starting at Z is fine, and i love the thought of the pasture bonus being usable in this way.

Why would you sort surrogate mares by era? They do not pass their era on.

because i might need certain eras later for other breeding?

The drop-down would not help you in that case as it will never show you eras. Better to properly organize your horses with a naming scheme to prevent any issues like that.

Or you can use the search and implant embryos individually.

I like reverse alphabetical order! I could name all my surrogate mares with the prefix Z and that would make it easy to have them pop up first.

I'm excited for these changes! I use embryos a ton, especially lately.

How should the list be ordered? Should it stay in reverse alphabetical order or should it go from most pasture days to least? I definitely think it should be alphabetical. My surrogates are usually unspayed mares that I put in my show barns and all have the same first letter of their name.

I would use the university surrogate SO much if I keep using embryos the way I do now. Sometimes I run out of mares to use, and if I had the option to spay some of them to keep them just as show horses I definitely would! However I do agree that maybe it should stay at the bottom of the list as that would be the least user frustrating :)

Interesting changes, I mean I have pasture space so it wouldn't be too hard to put a herd of mares just for ET into one of them. Seems a bit of a waste, as of course at the moment the ET mares still show, but I guess I just need to collect more ET mares. I like the idea of being able to get a full pasture bonus for the ET foals. I would have thought it would be the donor mare for pasture bonus, but I can run with the recip mare. All changes that will end up a good benefit, so I'm happy with that.

I would prefer the list be reverse alphabetical for sure, I have many many mares in the pasture, I wouldn't want them all them showing up first to be recips as they will all have 30 days as well

If you don't want the extra foal bonus and want them showing instead, don't put them in the pasture. :) \you don't need to use the pasture for surrogate mares.

As I said on another server "The mare who carries the foal is the one whose health matters more so only her pasture bonus is applied. The donor mare provides DNA, not the environment to produce the foal."|

The list should definitely stay in reverse alphabetical order, for reasons others have listed. I am super excited for the University surrogate mares! :D
