it's a competition. you breed your mares to someone else's stallion. they have to be of the same or later era. you lock them, so you can't sell them back to the game until they are 6 years old. Meanwhile, they are making points for you as they grow, they're show horses.
At the end of each "year" there are prizes given to the stallion whose futurity colts have gotten the most points AND the owners of those foals also get points. It's a game where you have to work with others.

Bit of both, many stallions are up really cheaply for public, either LC or straws, especially to encourage people to use them for the futurity breeding. But also it's common to do swaps with people as each stallion needs 10 to get qualified, which can be hard to do if just waiting for random people to breed to them. The bonus is, that is benefits both the stallion owner as well as the owners of the foals for those top stallions

Or if you have a lot of mares of oneparticular Era, join the chat room of that Era and breed to the stallions listed there.
