Should I keep her?
  • Hey guys! I was wondering if I should keep this horse http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=2683277
She can't breed and isn't doing to great in shows, and I'm horrible at deciding Keep or Sell
    Thanks for the help! :P

  • She's not in a good place right now for showing, but she's still young and would probably be in a good place to show for a couple of shows before each level up if you had the time to try and work all that out (I don't ;) ) If you had the room it's worth hanging on to any young horse as they might be the one to eventually level off in a good spot for you! If her PT was under 9 I probably wouldn't bother with her though

  • The reason she is loosing money is that you have been showing her every week. The only horses that will make money every week are ones that have leveled off with a good score. Horses that are still gaining when they are trained need to be given time off to train after they level up. Check out this post http://www.huntandjump.com/forum/discussion/482/showing-well-to-make-money#Item_3 for some general advice on figuring out when to show your horses.

This particular horse appears to be gaining 3 points each week (which is good for a foundation), but has an inconsistency of +/-2 which makes figuring her actual score a little harder. I would say her score is likely 34 this week, so you should not show her again. Next week she will probably have 37 which is borderline so she might do alright. The week after that her score should be 40 which is the cut off score for 2N, so if she doesn't level up she should be very competitive. If she does level up to 2W that week, don't show her and count her score as 41.

  • Okay, thanks guys! I don't really get the whole showing thing yet (I just show everybody every week. I'll try to get the whole system down soon ;) )

  • Keep her! She just needs a little rest and a little age. Older horses are you money makers. I have some that leveled off in a great spot and ar 15 yrs old making me the bread and butter right now until the rest of my young stock catches up/
