Question regarding RL tobiano gene
  • Hello everyone!
I would love some help here...

I am aware that tobiano is a dominant gene and linkage with the extension locus can occur. Could linkage be the reason why people say a certain tobiano stallion sires 75% tobiano foals? I don't have the information whether those tobiano foals are black based (as their sire is). Thanks in advance!

  • I don’t believe it is. Tobiano inheritance is still 50% if the horse is heterozygous. Each pairing is a flip of a coin as to whether the foal will inherit tobiano or not. If they do, they will also likely inherit the linked extension gene. When a breeder says 75% of the foals have been tobiano, it just means that out of every individual coin toss for inheritance, the coin landed heads up for tobiano 75% of those times.

  • Linkage controls how often two genes are inherited together not how often a gene is inherited at all. We have tobiano linkage in the game.

    Take this example horse

His e gene is linked to roan and his E is linked to tobiano.

Every single one of his red foals are roan. The single red tobi he sired is from a mare with tobiano herself.

  • Isn't this game pure perfection? :x
  • Genotype of the stallion: Ee Aa KIT To KIT to (bay tobiano)
    Phenotype of descendants:
    66 foals total

    46% bay tobianos
    13.16% black tobianos
    13.16% chestnut
    23.68% bay
    3.95% black

Since 59.16% of his foals are black based tobianos, 0% red based tobianos, then:
E is linked to KIT To
e is linked to KIT to

    and 27.63% black based without tobiano gene foals could be the outcome of crossing over;

    Right?

  • You are forgetting that the dam can also contribute a black gene.
