How Do You Balance Your Lines?
  • Title is kind of confusing so I want to clarify that I'm talking about keeping multiple lines while still advancing quality and maintaining color goals in each of them. I still have absolutely no idea what I'm doing in regards to this. I started a line for silver black sab1 splashes and I've stuck with it for about three years now, but I also want to start an additional line. In the past I've not been able to keep more than one line because I find that one line will have the color I want and the other line will have the quality I want, but I can't get both of those things in both of the lines. And then I feel like I'm getting bored with my silver black line and need something new but I've worked so hard on it I don't want to trash it. This may seem like a stupid question but it's something I'm interested in hearing responses to, so thanks if you take the time to reply! :)

  • Oh, I understand the situation. There have been times I've wanted to start over with new lines because I was bored but I did not want to trash my existing lines either (because I can't afford to start with what I really want right now). What I do is combine both quality and color goals. I don't have set color lines. I just make sure the horses have at least dun with splash or sabino plus something else. The only lines that matter to me, line wise, are sire lines. When I get bored since I can't afford to start over, is to tighten things up. Go through my horses, look through them, and find a reason to cull some.

  • I have two lines, chestnut and not chestnut. Otherwise, they're very similar (S+, Sabino).

If the quality is seeping away, don't be afraid to cull heavily and add new foundation or low-gen blood. I've been gradually replacing my older lines with new ones since the pastures came out, because the younger ones have better quality. At one point, I had to geld all my 4th and higher gen stallions because I was getting new 3rd gens that were as good as my previous 5th gens! It was terrifying to do, but the results have been worth it. :)

  • I would like to add pastures for my 4th gen and 5th gen mares, but I can't afford to right now. I do have pastures for foundation, 2nd gen and 3rd gen.
  • I have a boosted line an expro line and two C lines. Each has different color goals and differing levels of strictness to improvement.

  • I don't have boosted lines, but I do have ex pro and C sire lines. I uphold both to the same standards.
  • I have seen the same thing with pastures now. I have 2G mares in my pasture and my 3G horses are so much better than the ones I had bred before, so that's a great idea to go back and cull those older 3G horses. Pastures are such a great tool so I think I need to save up for more.
I'm playing around with the idea of just adding agouti to my current line to mix things up a little bit.
Thanks for the advice, this is all great and extremely helpful!
