Consistency and Perf. Test
-
Can someone explain exactly what consistency and performance test scores reflect? Do they at all play into breeding? Do you NOT want to breed a inconsistent horse? What is the maximum test score and what is average? Alternatively if the horse has a good score but inconsistent, what would you do with it? Or low score AND inconsistent - cull?
Sorry, I know a lot of questions I tried to look in the Wiki but there isn't any complete articles at least that I could find.
Thank you :) -
Consistency and Performance are ALL about Showing.. They do not ( unless Ammit changed it ) play into breeding at all.. Some people GMT to a consistent score. Especially for the Show Herd, others do not. An unconsistent horse when he shows sometimes places first and sometimes places last...so you dont get the same number of points from them every time you show them. Check the Leaderboards for PT scores.. some people Max and Boost their horses to get better PT scores and rank higher in the LB, some dont. There really isnt a way to completely predict a PT score .. sometimes when you breed 2 XP horses with a PT Score of 10.4 you get foals that are 9.9 OR you can get foals that are 10.9... I ve found Pasture bred foals are the ones with the most differences now that Ammit has changed the IV Breeding lab to include being able to breed a 30 day pasture bonus Mare with a Straw and give you the "extra" 15 day bump to the foal. Hope this helped :)

That does help a lot, thank you!

Just wanna mention that consistency is heritable, but it does not affect breeding ability.Alternatively if the horse has a good score but inconsistent, what would you do with it? Or low score AND inconsistent - cull?
Depends on what you mean by good score. Good PT? Good papers? If good papers, I would keep it, and maybe GMT to be perfectly consistent. Really just depends on you and how your project is going. If you have plenty of consistent horses of the same papers, personally I would cull the inconsistent ones. But if you only have a few horses, then 100% keep the inconsistent ones if they have good papers. if low papers and inconsistent, 100% cull. Really it depends on the papers, because inconsistency only affects showing, not breeding.
And just extra information: PT scores are how long a horse will train. A higher PT horse will train longer and will therefore earn more points. Consistency scores are how "consistently" a horse shows. A consistent horse will consistently get the same scores, while an inconsistent horse may get a good score, and then a bad score. However, this actually does not dramatically affect how many points a horse can earn, except that it lowers PT a little bit and therefore training time. Both PT and consistency never relate to how good a horse is, breeding wise.Post edited by darkphoenix at 2025-02-24 14:01:45darkphoenix (she/her) - #277251 - basic upgrade

Thank you! That makes sense, I know how papers work I just meant good score in regards to performance test. I have a B papered stud whoms color I love, but he is 9.50 score and inconsistent so wasn't sure if he would be worth saving or even worth gelding to show.

is he a foundation? if you post him here we might be able to help you further :)Thanked by 1paintedlytening

The only way inconsistency impacts breeding is that the more inconsistent a horse is, the bigger the chance that their foals are more inconsistent, and SBA will alter horses that are very inconsistent. So if your breeding horses are getting more and more inconsistent through the generations, it will make it harder to get foals that pass SBA.ID 195859Thanked by 1paintedlytening

OK are you breeding for grey? or chestnut? if so since he papered higher than his Daddy he is worth keeping as breeding stock .. If that is what you want to breed for... as long as you breed him to mares of equal quality he should give you some nice foals... remember to keep the mares in pasture for as long as possible.. ( I put my brood mares in pasture as close to 4yo as I can and leave them there until they age out but not everyone has that kind of space )Thanked by 1paintedlytening

So even though he is inconsistent and test grade is 9.50 that could still be a good breeding stock?

His PT score ONLY matters when Showing.. if you have a spare GMT you can certainly fix his consistancy :)

If you breed inconsistent to inconsistent you might get a very inconsistent horse and they don’t pass BA? (Or SBA?)
