Color Codes
  • So I am somewhat familiar with the way the colors are show after you get your horse tested. the EE is black or red. the A is agouti. D is dun, so forth. But im having a really hard time understanding the rest of the codes. Can anyone take the time to tell me what the different parts of this mean?

Ee Aa CC dd gg FF SstySsty pp zz chch SaSa | KitrKit SpSp PAX3+PAX3+ VrnVrn LL rbrb OO IiIi WF: Extensive PATN: Light
  • the letters stand for the following...there are variations on these -lower case, uppercase, or little words listed next to letters ( Like Ssty) that tells you what the horse has. I have just listed what the letters mean themselves...I am probably not going to be the greatest at this so bear with me:
C is for Cream or no cream
    D is for Dun
    G is for Grey
    F is for Flaxen
    S is for Sooty
    P is for Panagre
    Z is for Silver
    Ch is for Champagne
    Sa is for Satin

Kit-shows you if they have a pattern or modification like Roan, Sabino White Factor
    SP stands for Splash
PAX3- is for a special gene of Splash 2. If the horse has it, then it will show "C70Y" out next to it
    Vrn is for Varnish
LL is for the appy gene
    rb is for Rabicano
    O is for Frame
Ii is for the Ice gene. What ever version of ice there is will have number where the little i is located
WF is the level of white factor the horse posseses
PATN stands for how extensive the pattern, if they have one, will be
    Thanked by 2Gael4ce Redbud
  • Note: PATN impact appy patterns only. WF impacts pinto patterns. :)
  • So, for example, it says OO up there. does that mean no overo? I'm having a hard time seeing what she DOES have. I now what the letters stand for now, thank you :) just still cant tell how to see if she has it or not. Mostly having troubles with the patterns, satin, sooty, and cream. Because usually capital means they have it? and both the c's are capital, and she has no cream.
  • OO means no overo, OlwO or OOlw means it's got overo

CC means no cream (or pearl), CcrC/CCcr is heterozygous cream; CprlC is heterozygous pearl.

SS means that the horse hasn't got sooty. SstyS is heterozogous sooty and so on. S+ is another form of sooty (someone please correct me if I'm wrong :) )

SaSa means that it hasn't got satin. (sasa or Sasa/saSa is when satin is present.)
  • Letters are cap when the gene is dominate, lower case when not. Satin is recessive, so it shows as lower case letters.

Same with cream.. C is no gene at that location, cr is cream, prl is pearl.

Most genes that impact coat color are dominate, which is why a capital letter usually means they have it....but there are just enough that aren't to be really annoying. :)
  • Looking at the genetics you listed above, I am betting your mare is a Sooty Bay.

Now it gets far more complicated when you start talking about Brown horses with A+ or At or those that possess the S+ gene that gives them dapples....

There are also variations of White- W1, W2, W3 and W4, as well as Different Sabino-Sb1, Sb2, Sb3.

If you would like to see any of these, or a combinations, you can either search for them, or we all have barns full of every single color and variation you can imagine, even rainbow (though that is just a few select folks that have rainbow). We will be more than happy to post some pictures and their genes if you have questions.
  • Thank you very much for the help! i think i mostly get it now :)
  • Here is a ink to an interactive horse genetics tool that will let you experiment with different gene combinations and see the results right there. I am not far enough in this game to try to use this yet so I'm not sure how much help it might be but it's a load of fun. Horse color genetics.
