Tips for a cast
-
So I had surgery earlier today. Had to have the cartilage in my wrist repaired, which means 5-6 weeks in a cast. 0/10, massive pain, I recommend this to no one. Right now it is a standard cast, up just past my elbow. I know the rules about not getting it wet and not poking anything inside of it, but I was wondering if anyone had any tips for dealing with it? How best to keep it dry in the shower? Is it worth $40 to get the waterproof style when I get it changed on the 18th? And just how am I supposed to get dressed by myself?
Thanks anyone! And apologies for any typos, on the phone with one hand here. -
Wow...sorry to hear this!
Yes, I'd get the waterproof ones. Keeping it dry in the shower requires a garbage bag taped close above it. As to getting dressed, I'd invest in pull on clothing for the duration. (and slip on shoes!) :)Post edited by Gael4ce at 2015-09-08 20:22:55Thanked by 1lydia -
Sorry to hear about that. I hope you get well soon.Thanked by 1lydia

@Gael Thanks! Right now the plan is to stick strictly to wearing pajamas all the time. Easier to get on and off, and nowhere to go means I don't care what I look like at the moment! As for the garbage bag, I was hoping there would be another option, but I already got myself some plain cheap ones and packing tape just in case. Oh well, only 10 days until I get my waterproof one.
@Abbey Thanks, me too! :DThanked by 1Abbey98 -
I pretty much broke something every summer of my childhood - I was the only kid in the neighborhood who could totally ride a bike in a 20 pound plaster cast up to my knee. (Balancing was real interesting.)
And that was back in the day when they were heavy plaster. These new fiberglass ones are much nicer to deal with.
If there's a better option than a garbage bag and tape, I never found it. I guess for your hand you could use like a gallon sized freezer bag and tape, but it's still the same routine.
Pajamas are perfect. I'm glad you don't have to go anywhere, it'd make it a whole lot harder if you had to get dressed for work or such. Pull-over maxi dresses are good too, if you have any. Actually, I think they may be better. One piece to fool with. :)
The only other thing I could think of to add is to get some Gold Bond medicated powder. If you get an itch down in the cast, that can help.

I was lucky enough to never break anything to a point where I needed a cast. I broke a few toes and fractured my arm, but that just got a brace. So this is my first time with one, in my mid-twenties. XD
Unfortunately the cast goes up my arm and past my elbow, so it looks like a trashbag is it. I looked at the special covers they make for them, but those things are way too expensive, and I'd have to order them online and ship them anyway.
Don't have any dresses, so we'll stick with pajamas. I knew this coming long enough in advance to have practiced getting dressed one-handed some, so thankfully it's not as hard as it could have been. Just still a little painful. The painkillers they gave me just aren't working.
I will definitely have to get some of that. Up until now I've just been ignoring the itching, but that really not easy to do. -
I broke both wrists at the same time as a kid. I was pretty useless lol. Hope your healing goes quickly!Post edited by Kat8805 at 2015-09-09 16:57:09Go boldly, where no App has gone before!Thanked by 1lydia
