Suggestion for horse search engine
-
I just have a suggestion for the horse search engine. This may have been addressed already at some point in time, but unless I'm missing something, right now it seems impossible to search for heterozygous genes. When one is performing a search in which they are looking for certain color or pattern genes, would it be possible to make a checkbox by each to specify whether you want it as homozygous, heterozygous, or both?
-
Have you checked out the Base Color and Pattern tabs on the search horses page? You'll find them beside the tab for gender on the upper right. You can select either the dominant or recessive of many of the genes, or both there. Of course, this will only search horses that have been color tested, but it is a start.

Yes, those tabs are what I am referring to. For example, say I'm wanting to search for horses with S+. The only way I can guarantee that every horse the engine pulls up has S+ is to uncheck the boxes for S and Ssty. However, that makes every horse that comes up have homozygous S+. I may not care if the horse is S+,S+; S+,S; or Ssty,S+. I am just wanting to find horses that carry at least one S+ without having to sift through those that don't; which in the end leaves me right back where I started. :) This concept/problem also applies to searching for heterozygous creams. Again, it is possible I'm just missing something, but if that's the case I would love to be enlightened. :D

You are probably not missing anything. The search engine is a pretty old feature, and powerful as it is, it doesn't include everything we might like to search for or every way we might like to search.
However, many of us who have S+ horses have created a tattoos for them, and agreed, when that allele came into the game to use a common designation, so putting S+ in the tattoo spot works pretty well for bringing it up in various combinations.
Cream alleles, however, except for Cprl, are less likely to be so easy to sort for that way. -
Hi Empire,
This has actually been discussed in the past. As I recall, the problem lies in the fact that there isn't (or wasn't) a way TO have the search function look for heterozygous genes, due in part to the fact that there are two alleles per gene. It's a code limitation and one Ammit is aware of, and as soon as she thinks of a way to solve it, it'll probably get added.Thanked by 1Ammit
