DP- how to tell?
-
So I was away from the game for awhile and must have missed out on DP or never noticed it. Anyways I've gathered that it makes red horses darker. I was wondering how to tell which horses have it. Also does it affect black based horses as well? Any examples or a link to discussion would be appreciated!
-
Ammit explained that there are two factors which contribute to darkening a red coat--Sooty and DP. Sooty shows up in the gene test and DP does not. If a horse has no sooty or is heterozygous there and looks like it should be SstySsty, you can feel pretty sure that it is homozygous DP, but the proof would be to breed it to horses that are homozygous DP and see what their foals look like. Horses that are homozygous DP and either homozygous or heterozygous Ssty will be called Liver Chestnuts when gene tested.
I think that DP can be found in Bay-based horses, but I'm not sure how to spot it. Likewise a black-based horse may carry it, but it will only show in offspring which are not homozygous EE.
Here is a link to my horses that have been given my DP tattoo. The one bay in the bunch has it because I'm pretty sure that his sire is homzygous DP.

Ok so I mainly breed black based horses but I was using an outside stallion and one of his rules was for the foals to carry DP bu unless they're red or produce red babies I guess I won't know?
Thanks for your explanation it makes sense now lol -
Honestly I would just skip breeding to a stallion with such rules. Some people get way to into rules and it just gets silly.Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

Yeah I didn't realize it until I bred the first mare. I didn't breed anymore to him lol. Although I'm now dipping my toes into the DP waters after all this :))
Another question on DP... are all horses that test as Liver Chestnuts homozygous for DP? Because I bred two Liver chestnuts and got a chestnut filly.
http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=3538765 -
Horses that test as Liver Chestnuts have to have at least 3 pigment density genes, so SstySsty DP, SstyS DPDP, and SsytSty DPDP all count. The first 2 will both be typical liver chestnuts, and chestnuts homozygous for both appear nearly black.Breeding high quality Sheldasen horses in all the fancy colors.

Ok that makes perfect sense! So liver doesn't mean homozygous DP! So my stallion is heterozygous DP and is homozygous Ssty and my mare is the opposite. So the filly is heterozygous for both and therefore is one dark allele short of being liver. I think I understand this now lol
