Want Some Advice
  • I notice that I pretty much always end up in the negatives for my net profits from showing. Since I mostly just play for fun I haven't been so concerned about it but I am interested in the why part of things since I'd like to start cleaning out my herd and figuring out what horses I do and don't want to keep. I've read enough to get that breeding & showing are unrelated (or pretty unrelated at least) and while I'm mainly interested in breeding I do need to actually make the money to be able to keep up what I'm chipping away at - figuring out the whole breeding system.

Can anyone give me any input on what I should be looking for in what horses I should keep and maybe which horses I should cut, or at least cease to enter into shows? I've stopping showing some of the older horses I want to keep for breeding who aren't showing well these days because I feel like I'm probably losing money on them but I'm just not sure.

Basically at this point I'm spending enough time able to come on and play the game but I'm playing a game I have very little understanding for right now.

Thanks in advance for any & all help!

  • Honestly, net profit isn't that important. What you want is to have a high point number of points. That is where you will make your money. For instance, my net profit this week is -2,750, but I earn over a hundred thousand every Sunday because I have lots of horses with high earned points. I show everything including breeding stock.

  • How can you tell how many hb's you have?
  • When you first log in your total hbs are located to the far right. Your total points from all the horse you own is located on the fifth row down in the performance overview section. Don't forget to log in weekly (I think on Sunday) to collect your pay! Show often and try to build a good show string which will make you money.

  • So even if my horses aren't showing well if I enter them all twice a week no matter what their performance is that's better than having them show well consistently just once a week? Sorry hard concept for me to wrap my head around I guess. Seems like if they're not placing well then you don't earn as much but I could very well be wrong, in fact I'm almost counting on it at this point.

  • Take this guy, for instance.

His net profit is -1, but he has over 900 points, so he earns me 400hbs every week regardless of how he places in current shows. He earned 16 points placing 9th out of 17, so he is increasing my bonus every time he shows. If you click on the class name under the records tab, you can see where he ended up, who he showed against and how the points were awarded. I'm sure other members can probably explain it better, but that is how I've been looking at it!

  • It depends on how many horses you have showing. If your net profit exceeds your weekly point bonus, then you need to hold off on showing a few until they would start placing higher in the class. But if they are higher level horses placing mid pack and better, they will be collecting more points and making more money. When I had less than 100 show horses, I would mass enter everyone once every two weeks, and then depending how they placed hand enter everyone else. I think I have closer to 200 showers now, and I get a weekly bonus of 1600 ish and loose 130 in net profit, so I am still coming out ahead. Also remember it is advised that you have twice as many show horses as breeding horses.
  • I show all my horses, not just the neutered ones. Even the yearlings and foals end up in showing barns fairly soon after they are created. The showing bonus is currently 49.9999...% of the total number of horses you have.

Any older horses that are leveled off (You can find this information on their page heading the third block of topics, "Training.") and consistently coming in dead last in their classes would be the ones that should not be shown. However, if they have earned a fair number of points, they will keep adding to your showing bonus, so they will still be worth hanging on to. Any horse whose showing bonus is more than the total of any damages they incur is worth keeping unless you absolutely have no room for it.

You have to reach the point where your herd is large enough, but the time will come when you reach the tipping point where the showing bonus becomes greater than the loss of profit from showing. I'd been playing for several years (started in the fall of 2011) when Ammit introduced the showing bonus. Except for my pastures, primary barn, and one barn for holding horses to be sent to auction, I show everything. I have a total of 3595 horses. At this moment, they have gathered 1,474,217.0 points; my showing bonus would be 737,108 hb's; my net profit is -11,821 hb's, and I almost never even have to look at that last figure. @-)

If you haven't already done so, look for Ammit's advice. She gave an interesting explanation on earning money in this game without investing a lot of real-life cash in this thread:

  • I would like to make more money showing, but all I have are breeding stock, and most of them are tied up in pastures which do not show. So I end up showing my stallions and mares that aren't in pastures.
  • 9 of the top 25 horses in my stable, sorted for all time points, are intact mares and stallions. 10 of the top 25, sorted by all time earnings, are intact. I didn't take time to compare whether there is any overlap in the lists. I suspect there is.

  • My bonus is well over my net profit so I guess in a sense I'm still doing it right? lol

I've got around 100 or so horses (30 of those being foals) and upon advice here I've gone ahead and entered them all in their second shows for this week.

Thanks for all the input, keep it coming if you can think of anything else to add!

  • I rotate my mares out of the pastures, which means I have to keep my primary barn pretty free. (100+ open stalls, which may not be feasible if you are growing.) I just put 3-4 year old mares in my pastures, to earn a max breeding bonus, for the November breeding season. This frees up my older mares for showing. When I breed them on Nov 2, I will start rotating out the young girls and start adding in the older mares, which I may not leave in the pasture as long, so they get back in the barns to show. This has worked pretty well this season.

When I first started, and I was small, I bought 1 IV every payday with half my pay (I have always had the highest upgrade on HJ1, so I did get 25,000 hbs each Sunday). In 5 weeks I could buy another barn! I have never spent real money on barns, but like Raina, spend my money on GMTs, rare genes and pastures.

I now spend 3/4 of my showing bonus to buy new barns so I can keep growing.
