Pangere, What Makes It Special?
-
I have a pair of horses that are heterozygous pangere. To me, they don't look any different from my other horses. One is a bay and the other is a gray roan palomino, so it would be hard to see a difference on her I think. I've read the genetics on Pangere, but I don't see any color alterations. What makes Pangere special? Is it a rare gene? I'm trying to decide whether or not to breed for it, or to just pay it no mind.

Pangare is a very common gene, in the game and in real life. It lightens the muzzle, the flank, and behind the elbow on red pigment--bays and chestnuts--and the dilutions of them, although it won't show much there. Pangare is a complete dominant, so it will show up whether heterozygous or homozygous.
Pangare used to be rather prominent and not very attractive in the old color system and some players didn't want it at all. However, the new image generator that Ammit is working on gives pangare a more natural appearance, and some players have completely changed their minds about it.
When I was young, one of the ways I was taught to distinguish a "brown" from a "black" horse was the presence of this lightening in those areas. Now there are better genetic ways to tell the difference.
